Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for a first single shot. I'm not a hunter. Just a short to medium range paper puncher. Probably in the 100 yard max neighborhood. I'm thinking something with just iron sights. Something with easy to get reloading components would probably be best. Some may look down their noses on the NEF/H&R single shot rifles, but I have one in .308 Win that is extremely accurate and has a fantastic trigger. Short, handy and easy to shoot. You can also get additional shotgun and rifle barrels fitted for @ $100.

My first choice wold be either the Browning Lo Wall or the Ruger #1. If you want a classy get comments at the range rifle, I'd probably go with the Lo Wall. If you want a rifle that's a joy to shoot with (usually) available components consider the .223. Range brass for the .223 is still available for the picking up in my area. I have shot several NEF Handi Rifles too & they are acceptably accurate to 200 yards. The ones I shot had fair triggers right out of the box too. If you cast bullets I might consider a .308 or .30-06, then it'll double for hunting big game. Most folks probably shoot WAY more at varmints & paper than big game though & for just a fun accurate rifle, I'd think hard about a .223. Good luck, let us know what you decide.

for just a fun accurate rifle, I'd think hard about a .223. . That seems to be the way I'm leaning. Looked at a nice used Winchester 1885 in .223 today. Only thing is I'd prefer something with iron sights instead of doing a scope. Just punching paper, nothing more than that. I kind of like the idea of the Handi Rifles, and they appear to be a lot of bang for short bucks, but the stocks just look so bland. I'd be willing to pay more for something with walnut or something with just a little bit of character. Also found a nice used no.1 in 25/06 for reasonable money, but it's only set up for a scope. Was also eyeballing a REALLY NICE used No.1 in 300 Win Mag with iron sights and a scope for a touch more $$ than the 1885. Also on the hit list today was a gorgeous Shiloh Sharps 54 cal. black powder rifle with double set triggers. A good bit more money but really nice. Had a good time looking at rifles today.

If you cast your own bullets, a Ruger #1 .45-70 would be a lot of fun. There are some really nice mild loads for the .45-70 & they leave BIG easy to see holes in the paper target! They come with iron sights!

Haven't got into casting my own yet, but I've read a couple of pieces about using .457 lead balls for a Ruger Old Army and Trail Boss for a cheap fun load in 45/70's. I suppose getting a 45/70 would be a good reason to learn how to cast. Wanting something in 45 Colt was the reason I learned to reload!

I'm rather partial to trapdoors myself. They are historically significant and can be had in good shootable condition for very reasonable prices. My grandfather bought this one (an 1884) off of the man it was issued to when he was working in a gunshop sometime in the late 40's on the condition that he never sell it. The old man he bought it from had been a government hunter out West and took his rifle instead of mustering out pay. It is by far my favorite rifle. Eric

So I kind of got myself a single shot, and kind of didn't at the same time. I've been out looking around a High Walls, no.1's, Handi Rifles, Sharps etc. and I kept finding myself fascinated with this old sporterized Springfield 1898 Krag. It's was at the shop down the street from me, and I'm friends with the people that run the store, so I'd been admiring this little Krag for a little while. Lyman 57 rear sight (which I love) Lyman banded front sight with a gold insert, 22" barrel ... could be cut down, could be aftermarket.. not sure but nice polished older blue, military stocks with the cartouches and 1898 dates nice and clear, not too banged up, just a neat little rifle with a bit of character.
I'd find myself going around the store looking at the higher end stuff but kept coming back to the Krag. While handling it the other day, I opened and closed the action, and it was without a doubt, the smoothest action I'd ever felt. Feel the trigger and it's very nice. Nothing like any military trigger I've ever felt. I can feel myself starting to think this may need to come home with me.
Did a good bit of reading on Krags, and found out that there's a lever that shuts off the magazine, making it essentially a single shot. Hmmm.... a single shot is just what I've been looking for! Also read that they seem like cast bullets (another big plus). Thirty cal. lead seems to have a bunch of options that are reasonably priced.
So I ended up going for it. Got the rifle , a box of Remington factory ammo, and a set of digital calipers all for $350. Seemed like a pretty fair deal.
Not exactly what I had in mind, but I found this little Krag really winning me over. Weird the way things work out, and it was WAY less than I was planning on spending.

Ya, the Stevens is a machine. If you do your part, It's going to hit what your shooting at. The Ballard is the fun one. In other words, the Stevens is for killing and the Ballard is for hunting. Bill
