Light weight and 75 yard hand gunning are not a good pair. I've never shot a deer with a .357, just one small 150#ish black bear at about 25 yards. I would sure think a 158 or 170 grain cast .357 through the lungs of a deer at 75 yards would kill just as easily as a .30-30 with 150-170 grain pills at 150 yards and I have killed a mess of deer with that combo. I've killed several deer and two elk with handguns but they all started with a .4. I surely wouldn't be afraid of going after even big bodied mule deer with a .357 but I'd load a 170+ as hot as I could shoot it accurately, know my effective range and put it through the lungs. Dean

My FIL left in my care a SS NM BH .357. A few years back one of his grandsons here expressed an interest in deer hunting with it. I was tasked with picking or loading for it. Here, mature bucks will be about 200 lbs after field dressing. I've seen a couple much bigger. I chose from factory offerings, Federal CastCore 180grs and bought from Cast Performance their 180 WFN-GC bullet, likely the same bullet. Also bought 180gr XTP's too. Loads were started but then nephew lost interest so no deer were shot but I still think this the way to go with the 357 bore for hunting deer. I don't think a hunting worthy 357 loading with low muzzle blast a possible in good conscience. I'm not sure if any of the newer low blast, "low signature" powders are suitable or efficient with these heavy for caliber bullets. Luck.

I still have a few boxes of the discontinued Nosler Partition bullets in 357 and 44. I have some of these loaded up with H110 for use in my leverguns, should I ever decide to hunt with a rifle again.
