If I was going to try a 75 yard shot with a 357, I'd want it to be a Colt Python.

I had a similar problem. Solved it with a shoulder holster. You can carry a unscoped Ruger Bisley or FA all day and not get fatigued. I'm not big fan of hunting with a waist belt rig no matter the weigh.

I'd like all my 357 shots to be from pythons! Dad had one years ago. Real Cadillac. Wish he hadn't traded that one away!

Honestly, as much as I like Pythons, Ruger GP100s & S&W 686s have longer cylinders, allowing use of heavier bullets and loads. I think the Blackhawk also has a longer cyl for you SA fans.

just started to play with rcbs 200 gr flat point in my 357 mag 3 screw with 4 5/8" barrel, powder is sr 4759 for a chrony reading of 950 fps, bullet penatraded over 18" of cedar post. recoil was not bad, not much muzzle blast. I don't think a deer stands much of a chance as long as you put the bullet in the right spot and you know your limitation.

Can a 357 be loaded to minimize muzzle blast and have enough juice to hunt deer? Something like a 180 or 200 grain bullet out of a 4 inch barrel at 1000fps. I can't see why not. However, a 158 grain soft-point at 1200 fps should do the trick. As far as muzzle blast goes (noise), I'm not sure what can be done about that without making it a 38 Special. I've punched holes clear through javelina out to 50 yards, with full expansion and penetration, using 158 grain JHP bullets out of a 6" revolver. I've done the same at 100 yards using the same load in a carbine. If you can hit a deer in the right spot at 75 yards with a 180 or 200 grain bullet (SP, HP, or Cast) leaving your 4" barrel at 1000 fps, you will kill it. Deer are easy to kill.

Bile.... I agree with you up to your last sentence, "Deer are easy to kill."
Deer and moose and bear and pigs are easy to kill until they're not. Take moose, giant animal, no evolved defense against bullets. Problem begins with an attitude, such as "This is an easy shot," "That animal is easy to kill." Perhaps because I am not a gambler, all my shots come hard. Squeezing the trigger is work. Bradshaw: Every deer I've ever hit right - died - most in their tracks. Apparently your experience is different. Bile

Groo here OP,,, the only way to reduce the blast is to drop the pressure. The 357 lives on pressure so that is a problem. The other option would be a heavy 200+gr bullet at just under 1000fps. Hard cast and flat point. like the Penn 230 gr bowling pin cast bullet at 900fps. This will drill about any deer around but will have an ark like a 45acp. Your choice.

Every animal I've killed died in it's tracks too. Except for the birds, of course. And carp too I suppose.
Somebody was going to say it.

I think a 357 mag loaded with the 200gr cast bullet at 950 fps makes the gun feel just about right! kind of gives it that big bore feel, would love to try it in that little ruger bolt action rifle, better just go load some up I think you'll like it!

Most of my .357 Mag. experience has been with a dept. issue Rem. 125gr SJHP load. It is fast, accurate, devestating on medium size animals, & LOUD. I have some experience with the good old Lyman 358156 in both HP & solid form. That bullet is one I'd trust on any game suitable for the .357. I stop at medium game with the .357. I like the ctg, but feel a larger caliber is more suitable for big game, but I do use the .357, mostly with a medium .38 Special load. This is an interesting thread & I'm going to keep an eye on it.

Who makes a good 200 grain cast bullet? I've been looking for a mold to cast 200 grainers for awhile for my 357 max. but haven't had any luck.

Lyman makes a 204 RN that has shot very well for me in several different 35's. if you are shooting a wheel gun I highly suggest a custom mold. Do your home work and have it made to the measurements of your gun or guns. What you get from any of the molds made for the masses is luck of the draw. I have been down that road and it almost mad me swear off of cast bullets. You guys that are liking the 358156 give me some input please. I have tried several different molds and none shot any better than the other. Tried the 358156 in a out any modern 357 and 38 you can think of. We never could get much better than about a 6" group at 100m. That was out of a ss gp100. Tried different sizes and alloys to no avail. Powders and charges you name it we tried it. Cases, starline and WW. Primers magnums and standard. My old sw19 shot the best it ever did with 38 cases and the 358156 with a big dose of 2400. Go figure. Thanks Jeff
