I can't thank everyone enough for the toughts and opinions! But, what if we added say a 475 Linebaugh into the mix. Say a 5 1/2 inch for a little easier carrying. Is there much more knockdown power tramsmitted to game from say deer up to Alaskan Moose? Also, what would the possible velocities be from the 5 1/2" with the 325gr and the 400gr?
Thank Again! Mark

Thanks everybody! I have enjoyed all of your input!
Another question however, does all 454 casull brass require small rifle primers?
Thanks Again!

Thanks Guys!
Thanks Whit!
I spend time in the alaskan bush and have been carrying my 50 Alaskan. I am questioning the need for carrying a rifle and I want to start handgun hunting. I reload my 44mag with 300gr Horn xtp currently @ 1250fps. I have shot Cast Performance 300gr as well. But will the 454 out do this load hands down out to 100yds enough to warrant me buying 454?

Hello
I need a consences. Is the 454 Casull a better killer than the 44mag when it comes to hunting larger game?

I understand you would not have a crimp groove but you could use the first grease groove.
I have also played with the Barnes 535gr Banded solids. With the factory crimp die you can hold them in place but they have to be seated to deep for my liking. My intitial testing produced 1725fps with real good groups! Thats why I was wondering what over all length your mauser will allow.
I have played with the Woodliegh 400gr FMJ. I got them to 2150fps with no probelm. However they are to short for my liking and not very accurate.
I have shot this 50 quit abit and it keeps impressing me. I believe from what I have witnessed, it hits as hard a my 460 Weatherby, maybe harder at closer ranges!

Thanks Lee, that answers that! What can the over all cartridge length be with the mauser? Will you be able to let the bullet hang out abit to gain powder capacity?

Foxtrapper The Lee die set I purchased with the rifle comes with a crimp die. I like a heavy crimp as the gun has alot of recoil and I don't want the bullets coming out. I tried just crimping with the seating die and the accuracy was not as good as well as the velocity variation was greater.
Lee, I saw a gun like you are building at Cabelas in Sydney, NE about a year ago. They wanted $750 for it. I wish I would have pick it up! I would like to have seen if it could be lengthed to the 50-110.

I am not sure you want more velocity with this bullet. I too like more velocity! However, it is my experience that you can have to much! I shot that moose @ roughly 100yrds. I did not recover the bullet that was shot at him quartering away through the ribs and into the off shoulder. It went through the bull. When I walked up to him he was still trying to get up and was struggling to breath. At appox 10 feet I put one through the base of the neck into the front of the shoulder. His head was still up and I shot him again @ 10ft a little closer to the shoulder. Those are to two bullets I recovered. I believe the extra velocity hindered penitration which supports my finding in the soaking wet phone books.

Lee
Thank you! From my experience with my 50 I believe you should be able to get that velocity with the bolt gun. I am going to watch your project with great interest! Wish I had your skill!

What barrel and barrel length are you going with? Mine is a 18 1/2 Marlin. I get 1820fps with a 525gr Cast Performance and 1950fps with the 450gr Barnes and 450gr kodiak.

I fit these to my 475 L. It has been awhile ,but, I believe I ground out the plastic in back of the trigger guard. They work great. Are very comfortable with heavy loads and offer lots of control.
