When I was commissioned as a Peace Officer for the State of Idaho in 1970 I was issued a new 4" Python. Great 357s and I have stories about Pythons that would make the Python cring. But my heart fell for the Model 19, and still own some K frames. I shoot 357s seriously in my MC Ruger, and also in my Kimber K6 which is my daily companion.
Started out in civilian law enforcement with the 357 and will probably end my shooting career with a 357.

Boolitdesigner: I've seen two deer lost that were solidly hit lung shots. One from 30 yards with a 6" Python and another from a Ruger SA 4 5/8s Blackhawk. The first one jumped and bolted at the impact (dust flying off the bullet impact area). We pursued her all day, shot opening morning at daylight. Never did find her. Second one was a large doe also, and she ran about 300 yards and caved in.
Identical load both hunts, both shooters were expert shots, neither one was this writer. The load was a cast 158 grain SWCGC over 14 grains of 2400 and lit with a CCI 550 primer. Possibly a Lyman 368156. (45 years ago)
I now carry locally and not in dangerous animal territory a 173 grain Keith SWC over 13.0 grains 2400 with a CCI 500 primer. I carry this load in my Ruger MC to provide a measure of security for my dogs against feral and wild canines.

Flame on! 357 is my favorite general purpose, walk the property, go to town caliber. Experience has shown me it is too light for big game, even whitetails. Chased too many lung shot whitetails that bounded away after a solid hit, bounded far away. 44 Special at 950-1000fps is a versatile easy to shoot and very accurate alternative to chasing whitetails shot with bullet of questionable construction. My favorite 357 and I have several is this one: It is honestly smoother than a comparable Smith, just as accurate and my answer to not being able to find a Smith 357 Mountain Gun. It loves 173 grain Keith bullet over 13 grains of 2400.

Thank you RJM. I'm scouting for 45 bullets now and I remember that bullet from Speer. Experimentation is in the offing. Considering a 240 grain 45 Colt slug at 452 to see if they will stabilize.

Wildcatter: Load those lead hollowpoints in my 4" Model 15 S&W. They shoot great and they mushroom well.

Take each out for a day walking in the woods and the decision will be easier.

Yeah I didn't want a project gun but I got one. Slugged the barrel with the egg sinkers and it mikes out at .451. There are qualifications to that statement: I am not a machinist, I'm not even mechanically inclined. The grooves are shallow and narrow in the barrel. Will try some more bullets, jacketed and cast with GC and see what I have. I need someone who is better with a Mic to correctly read out the chamber mouths. I have a neighbor who is an excellent machinist and a farmer. Several Bridgeports in his shop. He's in the process of building a new welding table, I will see if he will take pity on me and measure the mouths. I've measured them and only two are identical in diameter. But I'm a retired cop, not a metal worker. Will keep you posted.

More measurements to be forthcoming. It is a pinned barrel. If worse comes to worse I may try a caliber conversion. I don't want to dump this old floozy on some unsuspecting gun buyer, I'd rather rebuild it. 41 Magnum 4" could be entertaining.

As several of you know, I purchased a "custom" Smith and Wesson .45ACP revolver that the barrel had been cut to 4" and set up for a SD carry gun. Front sight was ground down too low and I ordered a new sight from Midway and installed it. Got the sight whittled down to the proper height but at 20 yards I tried 3 different cast loads and the best was a 5 inch group. ACK!!!
Came home and cleaned the cylinder and dropped a new jacketed .452 slug down all six holes in the cylinder and the aforementioned .452 slug didn't even bother to slow down before it fell out the lower end of the cylinder chambers.
Haven't miked the cylinder mouths yet but I'm going to have to soon! Where do I find oversize slugs to shoot in this monstrosity. Everywhere I have looked it's been 451 to 452. Looks like 454 or 455 will be necessary.
No more Gunbroker deals.
