That same 45-70 BFR can have a 450M cylinder so I'd think that any reasonable modern 45-70 load would be fine.. I would tend to agree.

I contacted Magnum Research a while back and here's their reply:
"Sir, Our BFR's will handle any factory ammunition out there, including Buffalo Bore. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me below. Thank you,
John Jackson Magnum Research Customer Service"

I got the lever action max load info from the gun shop where I bought the BFR and who I buy my reloading stuff from. Guess he was erring on the safe side, safer than the manufacturer recommends.

Yea the people that write the cataloges must have been relatives that couldnt cut it at sweeping floors. I agree with Lee on the 45-70/450 thing. I also have it on good authority when asking said person,IF you use the proper components ie.powder and bullets, the shooter will say uncle way before the gun does.

whitworth, Read where you posted on the Alaska Forum that you know several folks who have purchased the 5.5 barreled 500 JRH. Any idea where they bought them at? I didn't clarify -- I meant that I know folks who have ordered .500 JRH production guns, not 5.5-inch guns specifically. That was the first time I had seen one with that length barrel as a production item. Mine has a 6 1/2-inch tube and I wish it were a bit shorter, but it is so accurate that I am loath to mess with it.

I called Magnum Research today and they told me they have produced and shipped the 5.5 inch model and the large distributors should have them. The guy at MR commented they have not been selling well ?? Weird, hard to sell something if none of the online vendors or web sites show them as being in stock. BFR's web site does not show a 6.5 inch model in this caliber, only the 5.5. Suspect there custom shop can make any length you want. I have my dealer trying to track one down as we speak. This might be more difficult than I thought!

Ordered a 5.5 in .500 JRH from BUDS when it showed up it was a 7.5 inch . Took three weeks to clear up, and never got the right gun in. Make sure if you order from Buds you double check you r gun when it comes in.

Ended up ordering a .30-30 BFR instead after Buds tried to charge me an extra $40 for the right 5.5 .500 JRH. Just have to order one direct from the custom shop I guess.

I have heard several bad reviews on Bud's. I have some theories about how that system runs, but I will keep them to myself.
I WILL say the guys answering the phone and taking the orders are not in the same location as the guns....

I will never order again from Buds they left a real bad taste in my mouth. And the customer service was not the best to be real nice. I was so excited to finally get a .500 JRH, I guess I will just have to wait some more. Maybe this time next year they will be more available or Ruger will finally make that 5 shot .480 Bisley I would kill for.

Sorry you had so many problems ordering your 500JRH, if you get one I would think it would be worth the trouble. As for Ruger making a 5 shot Blackhawk, well I just don't see it happening, but if were going to dream I would also like to see the Ruger 357Maximum brought back and for Smith and wesson to come out with there 500Special on a shortened light weight x-frame o and forget to give it a lock.

I'm "lucky" enough to live close enough to Bud's to just go in and pick it up off the counter or leave it if it's not right. Around here they are used for pricing reference when people trade something. It's usually fairly hectic when you go to the store.

I just visited BFR's web site. Is the 5.5 barreled 500 JRH the only JRH they build outside of going the custom route? Because the 5.5 model is all I can find.
