I have an opportunity to buy one for 1200 or 1295, I can't recall.
It looks about 95%; just a couple of wear spots, nothing bad.
It sure is a pretty finish, 7.5" barrel.
Not as slick as a Colt which surprised me a little.
Good deal or no?

Depends. What caliber, round or octagon barrel, Premier or Field Grade?

Price sounds about right. That is about the most common built FA on the used market. If it has the original box and any other options it could be worth a little more. You could run the serial number by the FA folks to find out when it was built.
If I were in the market for a 454 I would certaintly consider it, seems like a decent buy.

How nasty is a 454 compared to a 44 mag recoilwise?

It's about double, I believe. But if you handload, there's no reason you have to run everything full tilt.
I've got some full tilt loads, and then some 800 fps loads using Trail Boss with a 300 grain bullet. You can load anything in between that.

I sold one a while back used and got 1650$, so 1200 sounds good. Yes full load recoil is fierce for sure. They are finely built guns.

Mine is frightenly accurate. I got it from a close pal and hunting buddy! I love it. Will never sell it.

Unfortunately I don't reload. I understand there is no moderately loaded ammo in 454.

Buffalo Bore's 360 grain load is "moderate." It is not pushed to the limits -- as a nod to reliability. They still kick, though!

How does that moderate load compare to standard full tilt .44 mag?

No real comparison. The .454 loaded to even faily mild levels is often still loaded fairly hot. The SAAMI spec on the .454 is 65,000 psi, whereas the .44 Magnum's max pressure is 36,000 psi. There's a lot of room between the two. Add the heavier bullet potential, and even loaded moderately, the .454 typically kicks significantly more. Grizzly Cartridge's .454 offerings are "only" loaded to 59,000 psi, but that is still a lot a pressure in my opinion. Load the .454 to heavy .45 Colt levels (30,000 psi or thereabouts) and now the recoil becomes a lot more tolerable and pleasant for most.

If you don't want to spend the money on a reloading setup, you could always take that money and have a 45 Colt cylinder fitted to the gun by the factory. Then your options for factory loaded fare open up considerably.

I'm starting to think about a Colt Anaconda instead.
Thanks for all the helpful insight.
