Bigbore: what engine were you using when you ran 8s? Short-block wasn't anything real special 555 14.5 to 1 compression, the real magic was in the heads ported Dart Pro 1s and the Big roller cam that killed valve springs. The Car is really light weight, under 1950LBS with a 250LBS driver, its a strut 4 link car with a CM tube frame. It never really hooked good and was always getting sideways mid track, now its got a 10 to 1 484BBC that runs on pump gas. anymore between rounds I squirt off the radiator with cool water add some gas and charge the battery, Ive gone whole races without removing the hood.

Ya, my friend and I learned that less is more with drag racing. We're happy with low 6's in the 1/8 and high 9's in the 1/4. We've toyed with the idea of spray to go faster, but what the hell....that's another thing to worry about and added wear and tear. We leave off the foot, have no time for electronics, and run on motor alone. Sort of how they did it back in the day. Oh, and there's nothing slouchy about a consistent 10 second ride. That Willys looks like a blast. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Cool 40 Bigbores. Man I'd love to drive something like that.
Lee: what you got running in the 9 sec range?

Lee: what you got running in the 9 sec range? Just a back-half Nova with a stroked 15:1 SBC on alcohol. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Don't have any pictures handy, but since we've yanked the wheel on this thread, my dad and I used to have a car that ran in the mid 11s @ around 118mph with 153cid. And 27psi of boost. And it is/was american made and we were doing it before the Fattest and Furriest craze. Tires were 24.5x7x13.
I'll have to find some pics....
Funny how cars and guns go together.

Thanks, Lee. It ran great considering that it had iron heads, small valves and 13.5-1 compression. I didn't even have to wind it up past 7,500. But alas, it is but a memory......

How about mid-10s on a 10.5-inch tire and 346-inches?? ;D Nice, I need to move to where the air is better I pickup 4ths in Vegas. The track in Utah is 4300Feet above sea level and the air is usually a corrected altitude of 7000+

I can feel your pain! I used to race at LACR in the high desert and it just killed your times -- not as severely as what you have experienced, but bad air nonetheless.

At times I wonder if being a dealership wrench for 25 years is a blessing or a curse. I have a 70 Cyclone GT that I have owned since '87 a 64 Ford shortbed a 78 Mercury Police Interceptor for frame donation and pieces to put together a 525 BBF but I just cannot make myself develop any desire to work on either. Guess its a good thing I wasnt a gunsmith.

Guess its a good thing I wasnt a gunsmith. I understand completely. When my car hobby turned into my job, I burned out on it in a few years -- very unfortunate or a blessing, I'm not sure which. I sold my last fast car off a few months ago, and now I can more completely focus on more important things, like guns! Cyclone GT -- awesome!

Cars are a money pit and when you drag them they're doubly bad. Things break and you always end-up putting higher-end stuff back in so it doesn't break again ($$$$$). Then there's fuel, tires, entry fees, etc, etc. Most guns on the other hand hold their value. And while I still race, I'm starting to appreciate street driven hot rods more and more. Build 'em, then drive the piss out of them. Maybe I'm getting old, but rolling around town in this '33 is just as fun as a tires off the ground launch in a drag car: -Lee www.singleactions.com
