Occasionally I carry a John Linebaugh 5” Ruger Bisley Vaquero loaded with Grizzly Cartridges 435 gr ammo at about 950 FPS. I tote it in one of Doc’s excellent Summer Classic holsters

It would be difficult to carry in an ankle holster but disappears under a baggy shirt. You never know when you might need to shoot through a refrigerator at the bad guy

Last hunting season here in northwest Wyoming it was a Freedom Arms 97 in .45 Colt with a 5.5” barrel and our own MackaySagebrush’s 270gr hard cast flat point at around 900fps, iirc. I carried crossdraw in a Doc Barranti Northwest Mountain Companion with a hammer thong and it rode well with my backpack waistbelt on. That little gun came along above timberline and through the forest and kept me company while I field dressed mule deer and elk and packed out many different days throughout a successful aolo hunting season. This year I’ll carry its big brother, a FA model 83 .454 Casull with a 6” barrel and that’ll sport 2Dogs’ gold bead front sight and will be carried in the same Barranti holster (if it doesn’t pull my pants down) or a GunFighter’s Inc Bino Link holster, which is a Kydex holster rig that basically rides under your chest bino pack with the barrel pointed straight to my left so I can pull the grip out to right if and when needed. Hoping to take my first animal with a handgun this season, though I’m sure to be toting a classic rifle along most of the time.
I’m really enjoying reading everyone else’s responses here and seeing their photos. Great thread.

I would like to be that “one gun man” we are all supposed beware of, but I just can’t do it. 🤪 Most generally the guns I carry daily on the ranch are SA’s and 45 Colts. As I mentioned, the OM Ruger gets most of the holster time. It is 2nd from top and wears an XR3 grip frame. The Rugers get tier two loads, 260 grain WFN or 454424’s with Longshot powder, 11.0 to 11.3 grains. They shoot just a tad over 1000 fps. The Colt and USFA get 250 gr RNFP’s with 9.0 grains of Unique for 900 fps. I really try to avoid “urban” but if I need to go to town guns and loads don’t change. Occasionally I’ll sneak one of these two Colts in place of the 45’s. Lately its been the Walnut gripped 44 Special. The elk horn stocks are on a 38-40. The 44 gets 1000 fps loads with RCBS 250K’s. The 38-40 gets 9.0 Unique and 180 grain rnfp for 1050 fps. During deer season it’s usually this 41 mag NM Blackhawk with a 210 JSP at 1400fps. It just shoots so darned flat. Not a primary hunting gun but could be. All of them will most likely be in one of these shucks. Dan

Big muddy, I’m liking that lowest holster,….very Rybka esque with the Avenger style.

Thanks Trapr,
It was built by a friend of mine. He made an “Avenger” for my 1911. I shoved a Colt SAA in it and it sorta fit. Carried it for a couple days before I told him I had to have one made specifically for a SA revolver. I asked that it be a rough out so the smooth side held the gun. My friend delivered what I consider the best carry holster I have ever used for a Colt SAA.

Agree, my favorite for my 4” 500L avatar gun is a Rybka avenger style, very comfortable and secure all day long. I lucked out and picked up another from Robb I believe for my 5.5” 500Max.

I carry my Bounty Hunter pretty much wherever I go. In town (20 miles away) I carry it with hand loaded .44Mag (Hornady 240gr XTP backed by 12gr of Unique). In the country I carry it with Cor-Bon .44SPL 260 WFNGC (hard cast) factory ammo.

My new favorite holster for packing short barrels is the half-pancake style Big Bore built to my specs. He absolutely nailed the ride height and cant on it.

We have "constitutional carry", and I carry it either open, concealed, printing under the clothes, or whatever. I prefer cross draw for the vehicle, and "normal" RH for the saddle. This holster is ambidextrous and can be worn anywhichway (but loose!) .
