For those of you who are either full time or part time carrying SAs for two or four legged defence, was wondering what load, factory or handload, you have.. caliber, bullet, velocity... Thanks...Bob Last two times out in NE PA, I took my FA 83 Packer in 44 magnum, Buffalo Bore 265 grain mono metal load. My friends tell me just shoot a 41 magnum if that’s how I load 44 mag, on the low to mid end I guess. My response, that’s more than enough boom than I need. Note, I stay on or close to trails, no serious bumping around or deep excursion. 90 minutes is about average for me but still cary seruois medicine

It's rare that I don't carry an SA and with few exceptions it's either a .44 Special or 45 Colt, in 4 3/4" Uberti or Ruger Flat Top Blackhawk. I mean carry on the place, cutting firewood, bumming around the pasture/creek bottom, checking on the cows or running errands in town. With either I carry a 250-ish gr. cast SWC running 950 fps, give or take. The single exception is a butt-ugly, finish-worn 4 3/4" Uberti Hombre in .357. Loaded with a 162 gr. Keith SWCHP or 173 gr. Keith SWC, either running 1100 fps, within 50 yds. or so, it never fails to put a bullet exactly where the sights were when the trigger broke. It really instills confidence.

I too only carry single actions, and carry the grand majority of the time either trapping, hunting or for pasture work horseback. No other purpose but to use on cows & bulls, or cats, coyotes, wolves & bears.
Winterime when bears are hibernating, I've evolved to carry hollowpoints for thin skin concerns while trapping.. In my 41 special that's a 210xtp handload at 1000fps. Same 41 for times I might have to knock a Irate cow or bull off its feet and trust a bullet to break bones or a shoulder, I load a 255gr hardcast WFN @1200. That same heavy load goes with me packing horse camps through bear country when its my 41 at my side.
When I alternate my 44 in, it's almost always loaded with a 429421 over 8.2power pistol, in special brass, and that one covers alot of bases. The same 429421 over VvN110 or 2400 for 1200-1250fps is what I load when its my 44 with me stringing horses in bear country. My guns are all Colt, and I stick with them because I like 'em. Loaded like I wrote, they get it done.

Gun is most often a 4 5/8” OM Ruger 45 Colt. Load is a 260gr WFN with enough Longshot powder to get 1000 FPS.

In the City is an auto or a 3 inch mdl66. But in the woods probably a SA. A flat top 44 special,240 grain under 2400. A OM 4 5/8 41. Or a 4 5/8ths SBH. Once in a while I might go with my .327 federal. And often my wonderful Bearcat is on the left hip cross draw. ...Tj270win@aol.com q

Well, I ain't carried it YET, but when I do, it will be somewhere people aren't, and the first two will be CCI snake shot. The rest will be Remington 125gr Golden Sabre +P, until I come up with a handload I really like. So far it likes the Lee cast 158gr SWC a little bit, and the 158gr Hornaday XTP a lot more. In town a single action revolver wouldn't be my first or second choice, but it would surely be better than harsh language! Uberti Cattleman II in .357 Mag, yes, not a 45 Colt or a 44 Magnum, but I already load 38/357, so it seemed a logical choice. Also, animals down here in the desert southwest tend to be smaller.

...thank you all for the replies so far....
I'm mainly a .41 guy, both Magnum and Special, but have recently "expanded" into .44 Magnum and .45 Colt...
.44s: 1957 Ruger Flat Top 3-Screw 4 5/8" 1958 Ruger Flat Top 3-Screw 6 1/2"
.45 Colt: Ruger NM 4 5/8" Colt SAA 4 3/4" Uberti Birdshead 3.5"
The .45 Colts will be run with some variation of the 452423 Keith solid or HP in the 900-1000 fps range. Don't think here in New England there is a need for more than that...
For .44 bullets there is a MP Keith 430421 with solid, PP and HP pins in the 250-260 range and an Accurate 43-235V witha .39 meplat...that one will be run in the 900s...still working on the Keith loads but will be between 1000-1200..

....I guess you aren't carry a Colt SAA... Thanks for the replies... I carried a 3rd gen Colt SA .44spl for years as a working gun. Various smiths helped me modify it in subtle ways to shoot the same load as my S&W m21 so that I only had to maintain one reloading setup. Both have been tuned for 7.8gr Unique and a 240gr 429421, resulting in a little over 1kfps. I do not get technical in my calculations or measurements; sort of a "rawhide range" mentality, so sorry for not being more thorough. It is possible that I should be a little gentler on the Colt, but if my grandfather were still around (the former owner) he'd say use it to its fullest potential.

Bob, If I am packing a SAA 45 I like to keep my loads closer to 850 fps, but with a bullet a bit heavier than the 452423 you are using. I cast a 454424 that runs close to 260 grains. It’ll handle any job asked of it. Ben, Hard to beat a SAA 44 Special. I run my RCBS 250K bullets right at 1000 fps with Power Pistol. The only way to make a Colt 44 better is to “handle” it with nice stags and have it passed down from a Grandfather. Here’s my 44 Special Dan

45 Colt 250 grain Matts full wadcutters, about 3/4 of max loadings Tell me more about these. What dose of unique. Would you recommend. I’m assuming ( we all know what happens there) that a standard 250 grn load would apply

I actually use trailboss ( most of a full case )... sorry, I loaded a bunch, & have the recipe on the ammo boxes, but don't remember the charge without looking... in these new nickle starline cases... but they are traditional proportions for a 250, so I'd bet what your manual says for a case 250 would be fine

I've considered one of those 250 fwc molds before, but held off wondering how they shoot out to 50yds or so. Are they still stable?

Mine are, or at least seem to be, I’ve only shot steel, so no bragging shots, but mine are shot exclusively in my snubbie… a cut down standard barrel, so no unusual twist rates or anything

I'd likely not carry a SA openly even if Florida had open carry, but fishing I do carry a sub 5" RBH with PMC Bronze ammo cross draw.
