I've continued to clean the gun off and on. Throats measured an even .431" on all six chambers.
Barrel gap dropped to a snug .002" when I installed the Belt Mountain Pin. This is not unusual.
I'll remove the gripframe and clean the internals. Either polish the hammer or install a new one.

Next rusty gun you get dont use a wire brush.
Break it down and drop it into slow boiling water for 20 minutes. Card it with 0000 steel wool then oil it with mineral oil when you get it out. You'll be amazed at how it turns out. It's basically rust bluing it back.

The larger (tighter) base pin holds the cylinder more parallel to the centerline. This keeps the cylinder from being able to move and that prevents a larger feeler gauge from fitting. I hope this makes sense...

Pulled the gripframe and all the internals. Luckily, I found no rust.
Polished the hammer and lightly polished all the moving internal parts.
Coated everything in TetraLube and reassembled. Gun is very slick and smooth.
Likely to change the grip panels as these earned their nickname Cheese Graters.
UPDATE: Found some simulated ivory grips that fit perfectly. Hopefully Tim can post updated pics.

I hope this makes sense... No sir it doesn’t, at least not in my tiny little brain. If something tilts on it’s axis whichever side is getting further away, the other side is getting equally closer. I can see that it could make the cylinder gap more uniform on axis, but not tighter. But hell, I’m a dummy. 😂 Exactly. When the feeler gauge tilts the cylinder away from the barrel protrusion, the bottom will close up, opening the gap on the top. This misalignment also occurs when firing. A proper base pin stops the tilting and the associated hammering from the looseness during firing. Not only does a proper fit base pin improve accuracy by maintaining alignment, it also keeps the gun from hammering itself to death

I bought one when they came out. It's still unfired even though I bought it to use. Will feel much better shooting this one. Added a Belt Mountain #5 Base Pin and may get some grips for it. Yup, these are the best shooters, you just shoot and don't worry.

I walked in a shop last week where a guy was buying one for $500. I was sick that I was late for that one. It is y to he only one I have ever seen locally. The shop owner nor the buyer knew that it was any different from a super Blackhawk other than the writing on it.

PLUS +++ it’s a early gun with the 870 prefix, more attention was given to the early guns. Do you need a SBH Hammer back? A few days after your SBH Hammer arrived, I found the OM SBH hammer I had been hunting for. You probably wondered why I didn’t ask for a picture (you offered up) It was going to be the top of a chop, cut, re-build. My early 870 prefix 50th that got the Super treatment w/ SBH Hammer, Brass Hunter Grip Frame, Super grips, much easier to hang on too😁 I found the thinner /smaller New Vaquero (XR3) grip frame to small for my big mitts. The early guns had the 100% correct, squared up Micro Sight. No Rounded off edges.

I have no doubt this gun will shoot. If it does, it'll stay just like it is. A few blemishes in the finish is all I can fault it for.
My original thought was a base gun. But, never thought it'd clean up like this.
It'll likely get a SBH Hammer. But, other than that, it has a home.
Stout loads of Unique will do all I need in Louisiana.
Tomorrow, I'll walk out to my bench and post a range report...
