I was just wondering if any of you have a strong opinion as to the best compromise of barrel length for velocity, packability/weight, sight radius and aesthetics. My preference has long been 5-1/2" but if you could get any barrel length in a Bisley shooting modern loads in .41, .44, or .45 what would it be and why?

Like you, I tend to prefer the 5 1/2" length. However, I "think" I might develop an affection for the shorter barrel (3 1/2", maybe?) that I've seen on some Lipsey's special runs.

I go in circles on this topic, I convinced myself that 4 5/8" barrel was all I need, then a couple of 5 1/2" join and then lately it has been 7 1/2"

My preference is the 7 1/2” in 357, 41, and 45 colt. I have a couple of new model flattop 44 specials in 4 5/8 and 51/2” that feel wonky to me. Though the 5 1/2” one gets shot a lot and shoots well.
I hope to add an aluminum frame bisley to a 7 1/2” 44 super Blackhawk and maybe the same to a 10 1/2” one as well. I bet I like those too.
I hope to

AS A HOLSTERED REVOLVER, WORN ON A GUN BELT, AND GOOD FOR WALKING, SITTING, RIDING IN A MOTOR VEHICLE, ACCURATE SHOOTING AND PLENTY OF POWER, I WILL TAKE A 5.5" REVOLVER ALL DAY, EVERY DAY. I HAVE 5 SHOT NIMROD STYLE BISLEYS IN 475, 475/480 (DUAL CYLINDERED), 500JRH AND 45 COLT, A JRH CUSTOM 6 SHOT 45 COLT BISLEY AND A BOWEN 6 SHOT 45 COLT PRFECTED BISLEY, ALL WITH 5.5" BARRELS.

I ALSO HAVE AN EARLY 7.5" 45 COLT BISLEY BUT SINCE I GOT MY FIRST 5.5" 45 COLT BISLEY THE 7.5" HAS BECOME A SAFE QUEEN. ALSO HAVE A 7.5" HUNTER MODEL BISLEY IN 45 COLT, SCOPED, WHICH I HAVE USED SOME FOR HUNTING FROM A DEER BLIND (I CARRY IT BACK & FORTH IN A ZIPPERED GUN BAG).

I have them in 3-3/4, 4-5/8, 5-1/2, and 6-1/2" lengths. The 3.75" is very convenient for packing around as a companion revolver while carrying a rifle, binos, and day pack. The 4-5/8" almost as convenient. Pretty much my default of factory run options. The 5.5" use to be my ideal all-purpose length. Now days, I think I would prefer an even 5" length. The 6.5", I would choose for a dedicated hunting revolver length. I have one in a 480 Ruger, and really like the feel of this revolver.

Not to hijack, but I never get tired of looking at Mr. Taffin’s guns.
The 5.5” is my favorite for carrying whether .44 Special or .45 Colt, but the 7.5” gets the nod for a hunting gun in .44 mag, and of course the 6.5” in my .41 mag.

I am partial to them in the 5” range. My two favorites are a 5” BFR and a 4 7/8” Flattop 44 special both sporting their version of a Bisley grip.

As a cowboy action shooter I've been shooting 45 Colt Vaquero Bisleys for years. I shoot them one handed (duelist style) and love the 5.5" barrel. It balances better for me than the shorter factory offering and is much better for packing than the 7.5"". My natural preference in 45 Colt Ruger BHs then is also a 5.5". One handed or two handed with the stouter loads a 45 Colt Ruger can handle, I've never wanted anything else.
That said, my 44 mag Ruger SBH Bisley has the short 3.75" barrel and is ridiculous fun with 300 grainers. Recoil is stout, but I giggle when I shoot this one.

I like my 5" BFR and 5.5" Blackhawk length guns best.
