How are we shipping our handguns to gunsmiths now with FEDEX and UPS refusing to carry handguns for non-licensees?

Since it is not a transfer you can ship via USPS flat rate box. And, again, since it is not a transfer, your gunsmith can mail it right to your front door.

I think USPS ships rifles and shotguns from private individuals, but not handguns. FFLs can ship handguns via USPS.
If you have a good dealer, I think paying them to ship via USPS is currently the best way to go. In the past, involving and FFL was an unnecessary cost.
Gunsmiths can USPS directly back to you since they hold an FFL.
I think any of the carriers will ship gun parts still.

Non-FFL's CAN NOT ship a handgun using USPS. Long guns only. I'm not going to get into the always long, drawn out rebuttals about black powder firearms and C&R guns (yes, under certain circumstances they can be shipped USPS). Here is the link to the USPS regs: pe.usps.com/text/pub52/pub52c4_009.htmThe nice thing is that a gunsmith, manufacturer, etc. can ship a repaired/modified/warranty firearm directly back to the owner. So get a FFL to ship it and specify with an enclosed note to ship back to the owner. Yes, firearms PARTS (with the exception of the serialized frame) can be shipped USPS.

Not sure how that would work having an ffl ship it for you and expect it to come back to your house. It is probably on the books of that shipping ffl and the ffl receiving it is going to mark it in his books as receiving from the ffl sending it not the owner. I know I would if they have their slip in the box. And then you can’t ship back to the owner.

By law, if you ship from an FFL it has to go to an FFL and you then must do paperwork again.

FFL to FFL is my favored method. Develop a good relationship with a local FFL. Buy enough from them and they will ship for you for pretty much their cost.

You can ship FFL to FFL without it being a transfer if the gun isn't changing owners. If I want the gunsmith or manufacturer to return a handgun to me, it has to be UPS or FedEx. They USPS will not ship handguns except to and from an FFL Address. My FFL has an account with all three shippers and this is the information provided on the USPS Account.

If you leave it in the hands of the FFL he takes possession and therefore the gun is shipped from him. That’s the way the atf has explained it to me on several occasions. I’m not saying you haven’t been able to do it another way but if it comes to me to ship, it’s going out with a copy of my ffl. Your cost to ship isn’t worth my license sort of deal. I just think it’s sucks that we don’t have any decent ways to ship. Even as an FFL the costs are prohibitive.

Most, if not all, laws are largely left up to interpretation. I've shipped guns back and forth to four custom smiths and Freedom Arms.
Before shipping, I've verified they had the same information/policies that I had. They all confirmed and that's the route I go.
It's definitely about ownership and that's why we can ship a gun for customization and the smith can return it to us.
Of course, it's different with a dealer selling guns.

In previous years I would go to a shipping center and they would ship my handgun via UPS to the gunsmith. With all the changes with the shipping companies recently none of them will allow you to ship it unless you are the FFL. In fact when line ball sent My revolver back to me recently the UPS center demanded to see his FFL before processing the order. Most of the shippers are going to ask for the FFL from the person shipping it and most likely to the person you're shipping to as well. It's getting a lot more expensive but basically you have to go to the FFL and have them ship it out now.

I normally ship FedEx but recently was shipping a gun for someone else. The party on the other end insisted on UPS. So I went over to the UPS distribution center to ship it like I normally do. I was told there is a new process so I couldn’t ship unless I sent up a firearms account. So the other day I receIved a call from UPS to set up my account. Well it was basically an interview. A lot of questions on how many guns I ship. Percent that are handguns and long guns etc. I was told that was to figure out the best fit for my account. It was crazy. My second call should be this week.
