I am a hopeless experimenter as to handloading. I NEED adjustable sights for the most part. In just 44 spec brass, though not all for use in Specials, I load from rice/shot loads to 300gr bullets. Reminds me, the 32mags here, need some shot loads. Sure wish the fine folks at CCI/Speer would come out with plastic capsules for the 32's and 475/480's. Can hope.. Not required, but easier and increases payload without boring thru chambers for long brass, etc.. A length I've not gone to yet.

Bobwright nailed it for this house. I recently sold a Bowen vaquero that was one of the most beautiful Firearms I've ever seen, and then posted two pictures of 38/44 with troughs. To me there's a big difference between a contemporary custom 70 year old classic

I knew when I read the title of this thread, we'd have all kinds of comments.
I fall into the "prefer the adjustable sights" camp myself.
Like many others,, I prefer to work up a load, adjust the gun to suit my desires or needs, then never re-adjust them.
HOWEVER,, over the years,, I've found different bullets, or tried newer powders, or just different loads & have to make adjustments to the gun to get it to hit where it's being aimed. Or,, change the purpose of the guns use. Going from a short range preference to a long range preference.
So, I do prefer my ability to adjust the sights to the ammo, and purpose.
That's not to say I don't have any fixed sighted guns either. I have this Vaquero,, in 45 Colt,, that's seriously accurate. Punches tiny groups,, even in one ragged hole,, that was shooting low & left. Sixshot still wants that gun to migrate to the west,, but it prefers a warm Southern home. I did do some work on it to get it to shoot to point of aim now.

I like fixed. I generally use no more than two loads per revolver and I've never had any trouble concocting a couple that print close enough to the same POI. Then there is 'Fixed, with exceptions'- adjustable with replacements and/or files and drifts. If I've got a good square rear notch to begin with, those are my favorites. My old IJ Cattleman 44 mag which I cut to 5" and had the barrel dovetailed. Here it wears a homemade 'try sight'. It's a surprisingly good shooting and easy to carry revolver that gets carried and shot a lot.

It’s nice to grab a screwdriver vs a bench vise. Read the thread in the double action section regarding regulating one that’s shooting left… those ahead of us who were “woke” before it was cool… they sent theirs to DW King.
I like both.

For me it isn't a question of adjustable or not just having a good outline on the rear to highlight the front so that I can focus. As we've read a thousand times before the target is the final arbiter

Something like Dustin’s rear vaquero sight is a game changer on a fixed sight gun

I like to have the Freedom arms drift adj front installed on my fixed sighted guns , it provides a great sight picture and makes getting it dialed in a piece of cake . It is pretty inexpensive , I think the sights are around $35 each and available in several heights and they have a allen head screw through the middle to lock it down . All you have to do is have a smith cut a dovetail for you which is fast and also inexpensive .

IF I could find the DAs and SAs I want, and they shot the LOAD I WANT, I'd go fixed all the way round. Anymore, I prefer one load per gun, and that load can't use a bullet weight I don't want, jacketed bullets, require a specific or uncommon powder or specific primers. I don't ask for much. ANY load has to work with the few versatile powders I have chosen to work across several platforms/cartridges. All cast bullets.
I don't like having to tailor a load to a gun just to get it to shoot. I want to shoot out of them what I want to shoot out of them. That has caused me to do a lot of work on a lot of guns, as well as acquire, shoot, tweak and eventually let go a lot more guns.
If wishes were revolvers...
One 3", 5-shot stainless 357 DA, which would shoot 180s at 850 to 950 fps to POA at 25 yards - FIXED SIGHTS.
One 5.5" 44 Special SA, which would shoot 250s at 850 to 950 fps to POA at 25 yards - FIXED SIGHTS.
I'd be happy to be able to go all fixed sights, but finding (or tweaking to) exactly what I want has been elusive.
Those two slots are filled with a Charter 5-shot 357 and Ruger Flat Top 44 Special, but both came with fixed sights and both required effort BEYOND the limits of the supplied sights to make them shoot my preferred loads well and to POA at 25 yards. Both came with adjustable sights, but everything else about either gun is perfectly suited to my preferences. Having adjustable sights on them is the compromise I had to make.

I just remembered a fixed sight revolver I like a bunch, I have never fired one, but the new Colt King Cobra, has a bright gold bead front, and wide trough rear that works pretty well !...tj

Love the concept of a fixed sight gun, marry a load to the gun and just shoot it forever. The reality for me is as much as I like a SAA/Vaquero top strap the roundness of the top does not lend itself to a perfect sight picture like an adjustable sighted gun will. Plus I might change loads down the road from what I tune the gun with to start.

Then there is the pain of finding a great grouping load then having to change it trying to move the point of impact.

My S&W 640 Pro is fixed.
My Tyler Gun Works 45 Colt Blackhawk is adjustable.
My Glock 21 is fixed.
Do we really need them?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
