Last couple posts on the 38-44 thread are talking about adjustable sight guns… and got me thinking 🤔
I probably have 3/4 with adjustable sights and 1/4 without… I’ve always thought I “needed” adjustable sights… but in reality, once I’ve gotten the guns sighted in( either fixed or adjustable ) I pretty much never touch them again, unless doing something hugely different with the gun and loads
One of my favorite guns to shoot is my engraved 45 Colt snubbie… I pretty much hit what I’m aiming at, in this case, just required filing down the front sight some… it’s regulated for 3/4 load level 250 grain bullets ( I’m shooting Matts 250 grain wad cutters) but it pretty much shoots the same with most 250 grain bullets )
Most of my adjustable sight revolvers, get adjusted for the intended use of the gun, and I never touch the sights again…
Do any of you guys change the sights back and forth between several hugely different loads of the same caliber, or for example shoot 38 / 357 with different enough ammo???
I have a tendency to set them and forget it…
Now aside from my hunting guns ( and I rarely change those sights either ) even my red dot sights get set and forget
I’m inclined to revise my thoughts on adjustable sights
Any of you guys ever had a fixed sight revolver that couldn’t be trued some how???

I'm probably 97% Plus with adjustable sights. I've a couple fixed sight guns, but not many.
But, anyone who's ever read even one of my posts knows I'm not normal. I don't even claim to be.
I love to experiment with all guns. Of course, revolvers top that list. That usually requires sight adjustment of some sort.

While they might not get touched after initial sighting in, having them adjustable to be able to get sighted in is much easier!! My avatar gun uses two front sights, depending on whether I’m using 400 or 450 grain bullets. So all my sight corrections happen at the front, height and windage, basically a Vaquero but still not truly fixed sight gun.

Admittedly I have I think 10 Vaquero's 2 Uberti SAA's and a Uberti Schofield. I DESPISE fixed sights. I have around 30 other handguns from BH's,SRH's and even a couple Smiths and a Taurus with adjustable sights. Once I have a load that works I am done with them and there are no plier or file marks on the front sights. And I have NEVER had any of my adjustable sighted handguns "move".

I just don't like the sight picture of fixed sight guns. The rear trough is pretty crude. The front is rounded and neither work together to offer much of a crisp sight picture. Maybe close in, but not at any distance. Not for me anyway. I want the sight picture that adjustables offer, even if I never move them after sight-in.

For me, its not the ability to adjust my sights, but the much better sight picture adjustable sights provide. This would suffice as far as I'm concerned: Not adjustabel, but look at that flat top across the top fof the blade. Bob Wright

All my sights are fixed because, well, that's the way it was in 1873.🤠

My front sight on the 45 snubbie was reshaped ( still fixed ) and got blackened checker marks to cut down on the glare ( still fixed ) the rear “trough” could be reshaped, even moved to center either left or right if needed, and still be a fixed sight
The fixed sights have no parts to fall off, or loosen up… once adjusted to my ammo… kinda rethinking things

I wish Uberti built these in more calibers...

As long as I can adjust them in some manner I am good. That said, I do own a few fixed that do suit their purpose.

I need a good clear cut notch on my rear sight, I most defiantly Prefer the rear that have a flat face, like the Bowen sights do or the old millet. I just put a Colt 1917, up for consignment at a local gun store, The colt is very cool, but I can't see the front sight worth a damn through the rear trough. The Only Fixed sighted gun I have now is another Colt new service in .45 LC it has pretty much the same sight as the 1917, 9heck it is about the same gun) But the New service, makes a better out in the woods gun, just cause of the cartridge. If I plan on actually shooting, at something, More than about 30 yards away I need the good rear sight with a blade, not a trough. I like The Micro sight on the flat tops better than the Ruger sights on other revolvers. I was Just dry firing my OM .41, It has a Bowen rear and a garza front with mirror, and slightly narrower. It frames Nicely and makes aiming easier !...tj

All my sights are fixed because, well, that's the way it was in 1873.🤠 In 1873 it was also .45 Colt with 40 grains of FFFg black in balloon head brass with a 255 LFN bullet. Not many still use this.

I HAVE A BUNCH OF FIXED SIGHT REVOLVERS (AND SEMI-AUTOS) BUT MOST OF THEM ARE VINTAGE FIREARMS. MY PREFERENCE IS ADJUSTABLE SIGHT REVOLVERS FOR FLEXIBILITY, LOAD OPTIONS AND SIGHT PICTURE.
