Holster in the que, check. First rounds down range after a cleaning and lube, check. Had some factory Hornady 325gr XTP's that escaped my attention previously that just from standing, offhand, thru a 5" "group" at 35yds.. Some stringing on a 10 o'clock line due to me shifting my grip around. Someone mentioned that the gun seemed easy to hit with. Yes. From a bench, with a tweeked to gun load, and a better triggerfinger than mine, and this gun could WOW !

Have 50 Speer 275gr JHP's that will be next up for loading. The field and hunting bullets next up after that are some of Penns PC'd non-lube groove TH bullets that go 352grs on my scale.

After further inspection in better light, am still quite happy with this gun. Front sight on straight. Finish on metal evenly done. Action a bit crusty, hoping a cleaning, lubing and a break in shooting will help that. Even with the crustiness, trigger is better than my 6.5". Grip panels to grip frame fit also slightly better than the 6.5" here, but not as good as any of my BH's. All in all,am HAPPY ! Am thinking of all the adventures over the years where I would have belted this hand cannon on with a sigh of happiness. Will work on some break in loads today and get started on calls/PM's for a holster, front sight of Sixshots and more brass. Whitworth, will we be hearing more from you on this gun ? If anyone knows of or hears of an article on it, please share here. Here's some pics from Bula/Steve: "Forget the milk. Got bears?"

Mine is getting some "enhancements" by Rob Rowen..... Whit,,, What kind of Burl is this? I have seen several but I am not sure if it is an Aussy or a walnut type?

Just up from abusing my backyard range targets with this gun. I am ready to watch that Jurrassic Park marathon now. Will say, the front sight is more gray than black, and poor to see well. Have to check with my 'Smith to see if he is up to installing another Sixshot front blade on another 480 for me.

I received mine a few weeks back. Really looking forward to using this gun. Took some factory Hornady 325 gr XTP's off a concrete bench with bare elbows on the bench. Kind of a very impromptu range session. Only 10 rds to get the sights on at 25. WOW! Recoil seemed a bit over the top and I have no problems with my 4-5/8" 45 Colt with 335 gr running 1100 fps. Must be the extra factory velocity in the Hornady's. Figure maybe I shouldn't start with a 400 gr mold? Maybe something lighter, working my my way up? 350 gr'ish....maybe? HS6?

I don't know what the currently available 325 gr XTP ammo chronograph at. But All of mine is going 1478 fps avg from my current SRH and my previous ones got similar velocity with the 325 gr factory. That is with the 7 1/2" barrel. Its pretty hot stuff. A 400 gr load at 1200 fps is imo much easier to shoot. On my 325 gr Hornady ammo boxes it lists 1350 fps for the velocity But the chronograph tells a different story. I got a 400 gr Lee PB mold and a Mihec 477-640 mold. Both 2 cavity. As soon as I can get some time I'm going to cast. Hopefully work will slow down after moose season.

I agree that that Hornady loading of the 325gr XTP is snappy, but based on my years with 44's,so.. Others have said it's been downloaded some. Have some data by Brian Pearce where he notes a charge that equals the factory load, and then shows 2 charge weights higher ! For fun loads I have Missouri Bullets PC'd 340gr bullet in the nickle cases that some Speer factory loads came in, on FFFG and the same bullets in plain brass on TB, up to base of bullet. Both of these loads with mag primer, CCI350's. Today will be working toward a hunting worthy load using a Penn TH bullet they have PC'd and mdoified the mold to be grooveless. It goes 352grs on my scale. Huge meplat, should easily do for deer or black bear. Will see if and where I find accuracy. Gonna look at Unique/PP/Longshot powders I think.

Have narrowed to next batch of ballistic mayhem down to a load from Lymans Pistol manual from a few years back, data of Brian Pearce, 9.5grs of Unique with a 355gr OT bullet quite similar to Penn's TH. As a step up, A loading using Longshot powder from Hodgens Annual Manual that shows a starting charge weight of 13grs using a BTB LWN of similar weight. This should give short range punch. When I'm done fooling around, there are some baggies of Sixshots 395gr PC'd HP's that came to me by way of Alaska, DM, you cannot have them back. I'll be waiting at the end of the driveway in the am, the mailman should have a holster for me from P-Burg.

A 400 at 1050 fps is a sweetheart of a load. Gentle push and easy muzzle rise when compared to full house anything in 44 mag and up.

Yup, the higher the velocity the worse the recoil. I would far rather shoot a 44 mag with 320 gr boolits @ 1150 fps than a 240 gr @ 1425 +. Or my 480 with 420 gr @1150-1200 fps than 325s @ 1400 fps. Much more comfortable to shoot.

This am will make more loading progress on the 480 loads. The holster did show up yesterday. Nice ! Maybe will arrange another pic.. Got a cross draw version this time, as gun may be worn as a back-up, another gun carried likely on or used from right side. Oh, the holsters for both 480's came from that little ole holster maker from P-Burg, Doc Barranti.
