Interesting... I have read of those. Mine is marked 475 Linebaugh / 480 Ruger.
My Ruger #1 is marked 475 Linebaugh. Obviously, it shoots 480 Ruger just fine.
Have you tried to chamber 475 Linebaugh ammo in your revolver? Just curious if they used a different reamer.
I love all the big bores, so any of them will be fine with me. The Ruger guns are much lighter than the BFRs, so should be a great carry gun.
I got Gary Reeder to convert a stainless Williams Bisley 45 Colt to 454 Casull. With a 5 1/2" barrel, it's carry gun #1.
A 480 Ruger or 500 JRH playmate would suit me just fine.

Wouldn't it be neat if it was a new cartridge. Maybe a .500 Lipsey. Based on a .480 length 500 Linebaugh. Basically a Linebaugh short, like the 480 is to the 475.

With the risk of starting an argument, shortening a 500 S&W case to 1.285" would be much better due to the availability of .500" bullets.
Not saying it is a better cartridge, just saying there are a lot more components out there.

Encore, I agree. But I have a 50 Alaskan so I'm partial to the .510 on the 348 case. But a 50 of any sort would tickle me pink.

With you on that. Have a couple 50-70s, two 50 Alaskan rifles and a 500 Linebaugh Encore pistol.
Actually, one of the 50-70s is a SSK Encore pistol too. I got barrel #2 in 1997 when the Encore came out. JD kept barrel #1 for himself. But, he was good enough to engrave mine as "Barrel #2."
Have always been a fan of the big bores. Very exciting stuff these days, glad Ruger is getting in on the action.

I am as well. A factory Ruger SA puts the big bores in my budget range.

I find that, by far and away, the best thing about this and Ruger in general. Have to include Lipsey's too.
An affordable option for the everyday man. Most LGSs have Lay-a-way which really helps.
Hope everybody that wants one gets one.

Affordable?! After you lot order them all up their price will be higher than a BFR! Maybe right up there with an FA! That's assuming this is what we all suspect(hope!)

On the idea that a factory Ruger 480/500 will lower the value of a Custom 480/475/500/510 I don't see it happening. A true full up custom is a completely different animal. The guys with itches for such things will never get that itch scratched with an off the shelf offering from Ruger. I'd think that what would happen is that guns chambered for the cartridge will become much more common. Heck, it will even whip a whole new group into a custom big bore gun frenzy.

I agree Stan. As far as the above slam, it doesn't deserve a response.
The price of custom guns in common calibers such as 45 Colt certainly hasn't gone down any due to availability.
I hope Ruger does get into the big bore market. Seems military guns are the rage these days. With Magnum Research dropping the 475/480 & 500 JRH, it might be a good market to explore.

There will always be someone who wants a custom, or to modify their Stock gun. Just Like a Harley...... You buy it and immediately start customizing it at least some, so when you see your bike you KNOW IT"S YOUR BIKE.

I have to agree with Axe! The Lipsey run of .44 Special FlatTops inspired Ruger to make it a standard catalog item but it didn't diminish the CUSTOM REVOLVER a bit! Just provided a supply of mid-frame guns to do further customization, etc. If it's a 5hole .480 and am betting it is then if sales are fast enough and high enough Ruger might make it a regular item which will just fuel more customs simply because it will provide an economical base requiring less work to say provide this or that barrel length etc, etc ,etc

True. It may also help encourage ammo and component suppliers to build more products for the big bore market.
The 480 Ruger is such a fine cartridge. It deserves a good long life. So do a few other big bores.
Seems like the Single Sevens and SP-101s have done well in the small bore market. Maybe this will start the trend the other way too.
