I don't agree with that Bill. A lot of us work to be sure the "high regard" for Keith will never be diminished. I truly hope you are right my friend. But the tact-tard group of shooters I see at the ranges these days I just don't know.

But the tact-tard group of shooters I see at the ranges these days I just don't know. You mean the ones who shoot a 12 inch "group" with a Glock 19 at 21 feet....and take the target home as a trophy? I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I had my range at home for the last 20 years until recently and was not exposed to them. I saw this guy putting up a target on a little stand right in front of one of the shooting stations...."surely not......" I thought... but yes.

I had two bozos come up and park right next to me in the national forest last summer. They jumped out looking like SWAT guys and proceeded to hose the hillside with rounds. No targets mind you just a hillside 65 yards away. At one point a guy asked if he could shoot a gong I had set up I said sure and he proceeded to burn a 30 round mag from his AR at it at 50 yards or so and only hit it 3 times! It was 12" in diameter!
While they were letting their barrels cool they wandered over and looked at the single actions I had on my tailgate and said "I guess those are kind of cool, not very useful for real shooting though" I was fuming in amazement at this point and simply loaded my #5 and said "yup they are pretty useless noise makers in the hands of the unskilled and unknowing, much like your ARs are" and proceeded to hit that same gong 5 times with 5 shots within about 10-15 seconds.
I don't think Elmer would mean much to them but then all you can do is shake your head at times. But in the end we have to stick together as gun owners or none of us will be allowed to own them. I was nice and explained so different thought processes about fighting with what you have and in the end they each tried a couple of my guns (I was tempted but passed on handing them my 475 Linebaugh loaded heavy) and I shot one of their rifles for a few round (proved it had no trouble hitting the gong) and left hoping something got through to them. But I doubt it but reading Hell I Was There and Sixguns might help them understand where we come from.

Wouldn't surprise me if Ross ends up with at least one of Elmers guns, I hope he does. Also, the Corbett gun will be a very interesting bid, I know Elmer was impressed with Jim Corbett & very happy to get his rifle. One last thought, wonder if the NRA will bid on any of his guns?

Thats a good question Dick. Would anyone be upset if #5 went to the NRA museum? I haven't heard anybody on here chiming in to say they'd be bidding.

I doubt The NRA will be in on any of the items but there will be a couple of serious NRA benefactors that will be buying. Now where the guns go after that? Who knows.

I was hoping Johnny Morris would bid. Would love to see the #5 at Bass Pro in Springfield MO.
I am afraid I agree with Bill. A lot (most) younger shooters today have no idea who Elmer Keith is nor are they really interested.

Then we all just need to work harder. Pick someone out, make them your project.

I'm ignorant and willing to work with someone with a lot of customs that they'd like to share! Edit: I'm also a youth(ish...) and I own an AR. It's your duty to help me!

When I visited the Shrine at Cabelas a few years back, my hunting partner was with me (we were heading over to Rexburg). I had to beg him to stop, as he was intent on making miles. We went in and I was getting all misty eyed over seeing the guns I'd read about in my youth when he sort of casually inquired who this Elmer fellow was! Now, I will be 60 come March, and this guy is older than me and a lifelong shooter and Hunter. He teaches Hunter Safety here in Washington. And he had no idea who Elmer was! If it wasn't for the fact that I'm hobbit sized (think Elmer!) and that this guy makes Rob Leahy look tiny I would have jumped up and popped him in the nose. Instead I explained the whole #5 story, and the history of the .44 Magnum. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

I'm 33: first read Keith when I was 20, found out about him from Taffin. I mention Keith to newer shooters whenever I have the chance, that some of his books are available on Kindle helps.
Frankly, I find plenty of "mature" shooters who have never heard of Keith either, or if they have what they've heard is wrong.
Reading comprehension--and a lack of willingness to read anything at all--is not a problem limited to the youth of today.

I can definitely seeing Ross Seyfriend being in this. Whether it will be for the Westley Richards 577 drop lock or the #5. He had to sell Elk Song a few years ago something to do with a family dispute. Not sure how that all effected his financial situation. If this would have been 10-20 yrs ago I could see him taking more then a few pieces home. I also think that a few gun co. could be in this Smith and Ruger wouldnt surprise me.

I think there are a lot more young people than you think who know about Elmer Keith, its just like race drivers or anything else, if you're into that kind of thing you know the history of the game. The influence of Elmer Keith will live forever, he's been dead since 84 & its still rare to read a handgun article that doesn't mention the "prophet" & for good reason, he was an experimenter, a designer & a "doer", he didn't just talk about it, he did it. A friend was just over to the house tonight & we were talking about Elmer's guns & I told him about sitting in Elmer's front room one time & Elmer went up stairs & got an engraved single action, can't remember what make, he handed it to me & was telling me how talented the engraver was. I can't remember who it was but I remember he told me the guy was from Oregon or Washington, this was back in the mid 70's. He was quite complimentry about the engraving on the sixgun.
