near where i live, there is a freedom arms 454 casull with a 7.5" barrel on sale at a local gun shop for $1800. is has magna porting on it (4 slots) and is in used condition. it looks good but the total number of rounds spent is an unknown. what is a fair offer? $1600? I think that is even a bit steep. They can be found for even less if you keep your eyes open on the various boards.

This is what I bought. I added the fastfire II and the Hogue Tammer grips. I am very happy with the accuracy of this revolver. It handle the same loads as my two Freedom Arms 454 I've owned. My two Freedom Arms busted my index knuckle. My bfr 475 did not handle recoil for me as well as this Super Redhawk. I drew a mule deer tag for Colorado and I am going to use this for my deer season. I think it's hard to argue against the Ruger SRH as a hunting weapon. You're set to go with the scope rings right from the start, and any of the offered calibers are going to bring home the bacon if you do your part (44 mag, 454, and 480 Ruger). Those Hogue grips do a real good job of softening the blow of the 454. The thing I like about the 454 is that I finally met a round - on the way up from 375 mag, etc. - that I don't have to run full throttle to get the job done. And the recoil and blast remind me how old my wrists are, too! I like the Cast Performance 335 grain WLNGC. For me, it's got the perfect balance of weight, meplat, sectional density and stability-in-flight. Sure, I know I can run it at 1500 fps with 30 grains of H110/W296, but it shoots like a dream at 1430 fps with 28 grains of W296. And I know I can run it at those speeds for a lifetime of trouble free service. For me, it's 44 Special, 45 Colt/454, and then on to 480/475 and the 50's from there. Frankly, I wholeheartedly agree with John Linebaugh when he says after a point (total penetration of your target) the only thing added velocity gets you is more distance. Mr. Fowler stated well the fact that most of us probably shouldn't be shooting those raking shots at 125 yards anyway. I know I won't. I don't have the skill to take game cleanly past 100 yards. I'm sure some of you do, though... Whit's Bride of Bullwinkle comes to mind.... I like a DA revolver when I'm around claws and teeth that might want to do me harm even if I do give up my quarry. I am not[/i] fast with follow-up shots with a SA 6-shooter. Me, I'm real happy with a heavy 45 Colt with that same 335 @ 1200 fps. I've carried it in Alaska when fishing, and I really didn't feel any less "covered" than when I had the 454 with me. I shoot a lot more of the 265's at 1,000 now than anything else... and more and more of the 250's at 800 fps if truth be told. But now I'm just rambling so, adios.
