JUST SAW HIM TODAY AND YES IT WAS PEEKING OUT OF THAT HIP POCKET. A FEW DAYS AGO I HEARD IT SPEAK WHILE HE WAS BUSHHOGGING NEAR THE POND. I HEARD THE REPORT, LOL IT WASNT MY SHOT LOAD WAS THE W-W FACTORY 246g FACTORY LOAD HE STILL FAVORS AFTER ALL THESE YEARS.ASKED HIM LATER AND I HAD GUESSED CORRECTLY, MISSISSIPPI'S FINE COTTONMOUTH DIDN'T MAKE IT TO THE POND. This article by Mr. Venturino certainly has gotten a few guys upset! I can't get all that worked up about it myself, although the article does seem to be a lot of horse feathers. I think I'll just keep on shooting my .44 Special since for me it works just fine. It is very difficult for me to explain why that article made me so angry. Even though I know that it was done to stir the pot and I know I should not get so angry as to lash out over a stupid magazine article. Never the less, When I read it and saw MV standing there with a .44 in one hand and holding his nose with the other it put a lump in the pit of my stomach just like I had just been slapped. My heart has always been in tune with my beloved .44 specials and it just pisses me off to watch a paid professional take a dump on Holy ground. I am sorry if you don't agree or have the same enthusiasm for the guns and the round that I do. I may be fooled and I would certainly be disappointed if John does not feel the same way. BB

I have never found any of Mikes articles of interest in fact he is the only writer in that magazine I do not read. I guess its an attempt to get our attention and get read he is obviously wrong
But as I see it he is of no consequence as are his articles.

BOTH OUR EDITORS AT "GUNS" AND "AMERICAN HANDGUNNER" ARE NOT DIRECTORS; THEY GIVE US FREE REIN. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TOLD WHAT TO WRITE OR NOT WRITE. Editorially speaking, you have been truly blessed (in addition to all of your other blessings!). I do associate editor work for a scientific journal and I get all sorts of "feedback" from THE editor (who gets his feedback from a board) regarding style and format. Kudos to you, dear sir!

All that being said, I agree with bowenbuilt that if Elmer Keith were living, he'd probably drive over to the Venturino ranch for the express purpose of slapping the s*** out of him. From a 110 year old cowboy nonetheless! (I don't even want to think of what Skelton would do)... You sure? That'd be a lotta shit! Might have to slap him with a grain shovel!

Everyone has the right to not only disagree, but to dislike things as much as they want!

The best and worst of this magazine.
THE BEST : I read it because of Jofn Taffins articles. If he quit writing for this magazine I would not renew my subscription. While I do not find all of his articles of interest as there are products he will review I have no interest in. I find his writings very professional and informative.
THE WORST: Is Venturino I am the first one to complain about writers who are not objective and do nothing more than promote products good or bad but that is not what this article was about it is only an attempt to get read by creating controversy his approach to writing and subject matter have never held my interest.
As I said earlier he is of no consequence unless of course you are a scale.

I just checked my archives, and Venturino wrote a fairly complimentary article for a Shooting Times annual in 1983 regarding the .44-40, .44 Special and .44 Magnum. So, either he has changed his mind, which is certainly acceptable, or he's just stirring the pot, as some have already suggested. If he has changed his mind, I believe he should explain why.
