Maybe someone is trying to start a fieud between Mike Venturino and John Taffin just like Elmer Keith and Jack O'Connor. It would sell alot of mag's and start alot BS on the net.

Unlike the longstanding feud between Keith and O'Connor, a similar contest between Venturino and Taffin, though interesting, would not be fair. Certainly not when the topic was the .44 Special.

You can't feud with yer friends? OMG! I had better quit trying to prove my guns and loads are better than my partners. I'll also need to tell them to stop too!

When I started reading this, I was wondering if anyone remembered Charlie Askins. He made a career of starting fueds with other gun writers, some of whom were good friends of his. Charlie would write anything to get something started because he knew it sold magazines. Sounds like Duke is trying to be the new Charlie.
Back in 1999 or so, Wiley Clap wrote an article about the death of the 44 special which led to my article in the 2000 G&A Annual about 38 and 44 specials. Wiley's article irritating me paid off for both of us.

didn't Askins and Jordan swap a few articles with eachother about six guns versus semi-autos?
I'm pretty sure Jordan was involved, not 100% sure Askins was the other writer.

All that being said, I agree with bowenbuilt that if Elmer Keith were living, he'd probably drive over to the Venturino ranch for the express purpose of slapping the s*** out of him. From a 110 year old cowboy nonetheless! (I don't even want to think of what Skelton would do)
I still like Venturino. I think there's hope for him. He just needs a good waterboarding, that's all...[/quote]
They'd both laugh, take a sip of whiskey & laugh again. Both were gentlemen of the first order! Frank

I always thought Mike Venturino looked and sounded like a rich spoiled brat and when he showed up in Handgunner wearing the little german helmet and holding all his new class 3 weapons that most of us can't afford I quit reading him all together. Also he will never in a million years be in the same class as Skeeter, Elmer or John Taffin

While still suspicious that rascal Huntington instigated this brouhaha, I have decided to concur with both Frank and skysoldier: inasmuch as Venturino is not in the same league as Keith or Skelton, they'd undoubtedly have the class (and good grace) to have a laugh at his expense while lifting glasses of sour mash (neat!). Perhaps they're doing so now...

My recollection coincides with yours. I remember reading spirited debates between Col. Askins and Bill Jordan back around 1975 or before on the relative merits of revolver vs. semiauto. The more amazing thing about this recollection is that I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday. And I realize I've just dated myself...

As some have said, it is just to sell magazines, and it will work. Many will run out and buy this one to see what was said, and we won't be able to wait until the next issue to see what JT has to say back! Heck they probably sat down and wrote them together. ;D
I remember reading Askins when I was first getting into handguns, and could not hardly stand him. I got to where I would not read anything he wrote because he was so opinionated and I did not agree with him at all. Of course so was Elmer, but since I agreed with him he became one of my favorites, and still is.
I have been reading Venturino for years, and like his stuff on old west guns. I have noticed a change in the last few years with him though. He is trying to be controversial these days. Probably being directed that way by his editor. I do disagree that he only writes about light cowboy loads, as so many in that sport have gone to. He in fact wrote a pretty good article against that very thing. It got the boys over on the SASS forum all fired up! (sound familiar)?
Be that as it may, my new FT Ruger 44 special is the first gun I have owned in the caliber. After my first couple sessions, my thoughts were " Those guys like Elmer, Skeeter, JT, Brian Pearce all were right. This is one hell of a good cartridge" Nothing Mike Venturino writes is going to change that. I really do like it a lot.

NOPE! I DID NOT SEE IT OR KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL YOU DID. MY REBUTTAL WAS WRITTEN YESTERDAY MORNING.
Probably being directed that way by his editor.
BOTH OUR EDITORS AT "GUNS" AND "AMERICAN HANDGUNNER" ARE NOT DIRECTORS; THEY GIVE US FREE REIN. I HAVE NEVER BEEN TOLD WHAT TO WRITE OR NOT WRITE.

This article by Mr. Venturino certainly has gotten a few guys upset! I can't get all that worked up about it myself, although the article does seem to be a lot of horse feathers. I think I'll just keep on shooting my .44 Special since for me it works just fine.

well i freely admit that i read BOTH JT and the DUKES stuff. am not ashamed to say that yes typically JT writes alot more along my interest type but MV isn't exactly you typical gunwriter LOL, nor is JT in my opinion) the Duke does exactly what WE SHOULD ALL DO- he walks his own path! and quite frankly gentlemen, i know some CLASS 3 owners. Duke is playing with the more affordable toys available and from a time period that HE is deeply interested in. i dont blame or judge him for that. i was born in '69 and naturally dont recall the Vietnam era BUT various military weapons( some strictly experimental stuff) from that time frame fascinates me. LOL i just cant quit playing with my combo trapguns, double rifles & combonation guns or REVOLVERS long enough to delve into all the expense & legal ramifications of owning those that i could
