Seems everyone at deer camp has been missing deer this last weekend. I heard the usual excuse, scope is off, but it seems they all recanted after a few shots at paper  Seems the latest and greatest rifles aren't always better than the old junk. Made me stop and check mine though. I haven't shot it at paper in a few years now, but it has decent optics and mount so it should hold zero. Plus it doesn't hurt that I baby it as much as I do the better ones. Shoots better than it should 3 shots at around 100 yards with factory Remington 125's. It shoots as well with everything else I have fed it. I guess I have been lucky when it comes to "picky" rifles, or I just didn't keep them. Either way, I don't have any. Kind of an ugly little round And the rifle that gets carried the most during season. I cut it back to 16" and love it. The barrel doesn't stick up above your head when it is carried and it is handy as can be in the shooting houses. I need to shoot it across the chronograph to see just how much velocity is lost from cutting it down. Whatever it is, it is worth it as far as being handy.

Sweet! That is awesome! Really pretty wood on that raffle too. You sure can't argue with the results, can you?

Those 760's always shot well. The trigger was the limiting factor for me.

3 shots at around 100 yards with factory Remington 125's. That's some great shooting from that "hunk of junk". I've been at a couple deer camps where a guy would shoot a clover leaf group and proclaim the range was 100 yards give or take 80 yards or so

Those Rem 760s are better rifles than a lot of people think. I got one second hand a few years back that had been used a lot & it took a long time before the gunk quit coming out of the bbl. It still shoots 1-1/4" groups all day & just under an inch when I'm having a good day. Mine is the older one that doesn't have the bbl free floated. Is the magazine release on yours really strong? Mine is really hard to release. Thanks. Frank

The magazine release isn't that bad. It is strongly sprung if that is the way to say it.

I have a 760 in 6mm. It sure has surprised a few of my buddies when I brought it to the range.

My 760 in .30-06 shoots in the 1-2 inch range. Yes, the mag release is way too strong. It does not kick as much as my other 06's, more like good shove. My slide tube is attached to the bbl. Made in the 50's I think. Not junk!!!

There is a 760/30.06 at the LGS calling to me. But that carbine brl? A little loud?

There is a 760/30.06 at the LGS calling to me. But that carbine brl? A little loud? It is not noticeable when you are shooting at game, and when you are sighting in you should be wearing muffs, so the "loudness" of any firearm is a moot point. Its too late for my hearing, but I still wear muffs with anything over a 22 Short. I've had both ear drums replaced due to ear problems as a kid and I think the last time I had it checked it was something like only 30% of what it should be. Of course it has to be BS since I can hear my wife talking on the phone right now and she is 3 rooms away.

It seems that shortening them must be the "in" thing. We have a cut down one in our shop chambered in 30-06. Priced reasonable too. Its a bit rough, but nothing a serious clean up wont cure...

It always seems to help accuracy too. I think the main improvement comes from the crown. I guess factory crowns are not as precise as the one that comes from using the 11deg cutter. Of all the rifles I have done, all have shot better than before. The rifle pictured above was a 3" or so 100yd rifle with the original barrel length.

Discovery made early in IHMSA silhouette was the astounding accuracy of the short barrel single shot pistols. Lower vibration node of short barrel must factor, with a lower influence from stress.
The magazine tube also serves as the barrel retaining bolt. Remington learned that the tab at the end, which contacts the barrel but is not attached, tends to mess with harmonics. Barrels of the new Remington pumps are full float, with astounding accuracy and ZERO to be expected.
Hunters in the North Country find the Remington pump well protected against the misery of rain-sleet-ice-snow.
And then there is reliability: no semi-auto hunting rifle remotely approaches the Remington 760. 7600, and Model Six on this score. David Bradshaw
