Since you already load .44 mag, realize the carbine boosts velocity roughly 250-300 fps over the same load from your sixgun. By downloading the .44 mag to .44 Spl. velocities, you have a teacher cartridge for your daughters.
Don't know if Encore is available with a .22 Long Rifle barrel, but that would be a huge plus in the Encore arsenal of instruction and fun.
Since, in using a rather wide span of bullets and revolvers, I have never bounced a .44 magnum off a whitetail, I can only speak of its effectiveness. My secret formula for the ethical taking of game: marksmanship and power. A .44 in practiced hands carries respect among those with whom I cruise the mountains.
If you just must have a BIG BORE, consider the .44 Marlin or .45-70 Springfield. You may shoot .44 mags in the .444----at least the single shots----often with respectable accuracy. The .444 Marlin shoots flatter than the .45-70, but neither at the height of its glory resists gravity for long.
In the event you wander into elk country, the .45-70 becomes bigger than the .444 Marlin. In selecting either chambering for the pursuit of elk, a North Haven Marlin repeater far outclasses the single shot Encore. David Bradshaw

You currently own a caliber 'n rifle that will put down everything in the lower 48 and most of what's in Alaska too. That 6.5x55 is the bees knees for everything from groundhogs to moose. What I think I'd do with that dough is get me a fun gun...something you've always wanted but didn't buy because it didn't fit with your hunting scenario. Get something YOU want, whether that be a couple 22's in auto and revolver, a Bisley in 357/41/44/45, or a slick SAA USFA or Uberti. Since you already load for 44m, a slick lil 44spl would be something you'll be kickin yerself for not getting years ago. I'm not looking to replace my 6.5x55. I just want something handier for brush hunting (and I think it'll be fun tossing those big chunks-o-lead downrange). Handguns, unless they fall under C&R regs, are right out as this will be an out-of-state purchase for me. I can drive to my nearest Cabelas to bring home a long gun though. The 45-70 and 30-30 (in this case, 35 Rem) can be had even shorter and lighter in a Contender. On these two, under 32". Limit yourself to factory load equivalents in the 45-70 and all remains fun. I had a 30-30 Contender pistol years ago, but sold it. For this gun, I'd rather have a true rifle platform like the Encore. I'm starting with something like the 45-70, but may add other rifle barrels down the road. I also prefer "true" handguns and never warmed up to single shot pistols. Since you already load .44 mag, realize the carbine boosts velocity roughly 250-300 fps over the same load from your sixgun. By downloading the .44 mag to .44 Spl. velocities, you have a teacher cartridge for your daughters. I've considered that, but it seems most of the 44mag carbines don't do well unless you push them hard. I was looking at the Ruger 44/77 for that very purpose. Shame too because I have a great 44mag handload using TrailBoss powder (250gr@800fps) that would be great out of a carbine. Still thinking, still weighing the options... Chris

Not familiar with it beyond knowing it exists. Frankly, I'm not a huge levergun fan and would rather have the bolt-gun version. I would tolerate a levergun in 45-70 or 444marlin because there aren't other repeater options.

Here is my go to 45/70. A Marlin Cowboy cut to 18" massaged by Dave Clements with a Reeder enlarged lever. It's light and hits like a sledge!

I know of a new one sitting in a gun dealership.

Been a few years, but I finally got my rifle. I ended up buying an Encore in 300wm from Cabelas and adding a 209x50 for muzzleloading season. I never warmed up to the 300 though and recently picked up an eBay-sourced, NIB 17" MGM 35 Whelen barrel. Even though it's short, it only lost 120fps on Remington 200gr Core-Lokt ammo (rated at 2675). The entire gun is 31.5" long. Chris

Looks like fun! I was reading through when I noticed the date, and had decided not to comment. I'm glad the person resurrecting it was the OP.
I've got a Browning 1886 22" Carbine in .45-70. With the steel buttplate and hot-ish factory ammo, it is little fun to shoot at all. Well it is fun, but it's the hurtful kind of fun. I'm probably going to put a recoil pad on it so I can hand load some hot stuff for it if I want to and still shoot it.

That Encore is beautiful! I've recently become addicted to Contenders and wish I had an Encore so I could shoot heavier loads in 45/70. One of my Contender frames gave up long before I would have.

Thanks!
I had a Contender pistol years ago, but sold it in a fit of idiocy. It had the best trigger of any handgun I've fired.

I like leverguns in .45/70 a lot. There is just something right about that combination.

I have played with a couple of Ashley Emerson's Cowboys that have been slicked up and shortened by Grizzly Custom, I have to get one of them done that way one of these days. In my minds eye that and a 94 30/30 carbine are what leverguns are supposed to be...
