Any ideas on maximum effective range for handgun cartridges? I have been spending a lot of time with my revolvers the last 2 years thanks to you guys. Enough so that I am confident in offhand shots to 50 yards if conditions are right, absolutely no fear in shots out to 75 to 100 from a seated "sixshot" position. With my normal handguns I feel that this about as far as they should be pushed. I managed a load for my 454 SRH with 2x7 Burris,300 Lee GC and 30 gr.H110, that prints about 4 inches per cylinder at 100 and I can still keep a cylinder inside 8 at 200, THESE groups are shot from prone with a solid rest. Does this thing still have enough "ump" at 200 to kill a deer?

Yes they will zip through a deer at 200 yards for sure, you are the limitation not the gun and load at those ranges.
Dustin Linebaugh killed a 8ft+ Grizzly in Alaska a few years back with his 475 and a 425gr LFN at 1200fps and shit completely through the bear 3 times at 176 yards. He is one of very few handgunners who is good enough to take that shot at that range and be ethical about it. Shooting at wounded game and rocks is a different ball of wax though...

I agree with Fowler, at 100 yards you're probably still pushing that puppy 1,200fps or better.

I did not answer because "it depends".
If we agree that a 250gr @900fps is plenty to put a deer down, then I would say that the maximum range where velocity remains above 900fps with a 250gr or more boolit is the max effective range. Maybe 800fps is enough if you aren't requiring expansion like for a boolit with a large meplat.

Good question which kinda leads me to mine. The famous "Skeeter" load is a 44 Special at about 900 fps MV. My commercial cast 240 SWC have a .315 meplat and my cast 45 has a .395 meplat. Then, and I realise you have to take velocity and hydraulic shock out of the equasion,it is still considerably larger than a 243 or 30-30.

Math doesn't really work well when predicting killing power with handguns, so my best suggestion is that it will kill well out to the maximum distance that you can place the boolit through both lungs.

Since I have killed a truck load of deer with a 2 bladed broadhead from a recurve, I only shoot deer through the chest anyway, and by prone and solid rest,I meant an open hayfield and portable sandbags,I felt pretty safe

The old pie plate test is still a good one for all of us, if you can keep your shots on the plate then thats your maximum distance although most of us shoot more accurately at pie plates than we do at live game in the field. I have to agree, shitting clear through a grizzly 3 times at 176 yds is one potent load, I'd hate to skin that one! How would you test the hardness of a load like that.

Each situation is different. I've been places where 50 was pushing it due to conditions and I've been places where 200 seemed logical If you go strictly by the ability of the bullet to put down game, the shooter is the limiting factor every time for me. My guns will "kill" much further than I have any business shooting at game.

I agree with the pie plate test! I also agree that that was one HECK of a load! My guess? Spicy chili con carne with hot peppers and corn bread. Does it for me every time.
