Love that 442, great little snubbies. A comforting pocket gun.

I just picked this up last week. It's a 442 no dash with a forged trigger. This one was made in 1994 before the J magnum frame came out. ***** My favorite configuration of a J-frame classic, the Centennial Model 442 Airweight. Note the grip, with shoulder made to match lower hump of the Chief’s Special with exposed hammer. The Centennial Model 640, in .357 Mag, gets my nod as an all-steel variant. David Bradshaw

David those grips are not original to the gun. I found them at a show recently and I’m not sure what they originally came on.
The gun came with uncle mikes boot grips but they were badly faded. Same profile just different manufacturers

matt56.... that looks like a pebble-grain copy of Uncle Mike’s checkered rubber Boot Grip. Is the pebble-grain a Hogue? For the Model 640 .357 Mag, I prefer the Uncle Mike’s Combat bird head, which came on the gun. Wrap-around rubber makes the Combat much easier on the base of my thumb with magnums, which the 640 handles very well. As with the Boot Grip, the shoulder of the Uncle Mike’s Combat is scaled for the J-frame with exposed hammer. David Bradshaw

Yeah those are hogue boot grips with S&W logos. They originally came on some j frame probably in the mid 90s.
I also like the uncle mikes combat grips for my 640-1s. They are a really nice grip for shooting magnums

Those grips on the 442 are called Hogue Bantam grips. They come with a little tool to get them off, I’m sure you’ve noticed there is no screw holding them on, they just snap on and click into place.

Yeah I've used bantams on other round butt frames in the past. I have an L frame pair I used on my model 69 for a little while. Here are the grips that are supposed to be on the gun. I found these in my old bag-o-grips. These are the uncle mike's boot grips

These hip grip styles are pretty much off the radar anymore due to excessive fuglyness . But I have found them to be quite handy for a quick stuff in the belt at 1 to 2 o-clock. Plus they are not completely horrible if shooting became necessary.

Here it is paired up with my LS. Once I found the original grips for the LS both wound up costing about the same. Hey Matt, my similar combo involves a 65 LS and a 64-3 . Three inchers rock.

Needmostuff little fun fact for you. Check out the hammers on your 65-5 LS and 64-3. Notice any difference? They look almost identical but they are not interchangeable. Around 1988 when S&W started updating their revolver internals they changed the design of the K frame hammer. The new hammers have a spring under the nose to keep it pointed down minimizing the chances of it contacting the frame and breaking off. You notice the position of the rivet, the older hammers the rivet is higher up. If you put an older hammer into a newer frame the firing pin will not reach the primer. The nose is too short.
Now my 65s are both post '88 so even though the hammers differ in color they would both swap over just fine. I always try to look out for the post 88 guns. They have radiused studs and are a little more durable.
I am actually in the process of converting a 64-5 four inch round butt into a three inch 357 magnum via barrel and cylinder swap. I have an awesome 65 donor barrel and a brand new 65/66 cylinder that I just switched the old extractor over. The frames/yokes from my 65-5 and 64-5 look identical.

Congrats. I think you will really like it. I have the early version of that gun called the backpacker. Great to carry and a good shooter.

That is a beauty! I have one too I bought last year, actually it's sitting right next to me here. The fit and finish on this gun leave nothing to be desired. Word to the wise, those grips are for lookin, not shootin. I have mine wearing Hogue conversion grips to look like a Backpacker (which I want in the worst way)

My "snub" got an upgrade. I ordered new grips at the end of last year and got them early this week. They are an early birthday present for myself.
