Lee- it's like Christmas every week when I look at this thread... a real page turner! Thanks for sharing your project with us all... I'm sure it add's a lot of extra work taking the pics and posting them but it is certainly appreciated. The journey is the funnest part of these projects (from an observers perspective anyway), but I bet shooting that Seville when it's finished will even be more fun. You need to take it on a "Buffalo" hunt when it's done and blood it!

I just realized I never covered heat treating. Unfortunately dad got bored and did it while I was at work, so no photos. But to cover the process I'll use some pictures from prior projects. To heat treat 4140 the cylinder is placed in a small furnace: It's then heated to 1,600 F and held there for 2 hours. Once achieved, the cylinder is immediately oil quenched: The last step is to place it back in the furnace for tempering (2 hours @ 800 degrees). This yields Rockwell 40 - 41, C-scale. We test all of our cylinders using a hardness testor: This one scaled 41. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

Seeing the entire process is just fascinating. How about re- creating Ross's No. 13 for your next project? I really like the R&D one they did with the banded barrel. We've seen the Martin's machining skills, How about showing off the Martin welding skills ;D
What's the project for that small block Chevy?

What's the project for that small block Chevy? Knowing Lee, it's for his lawn mower. ;D

How about showing off the Martin welding skills ;D What's the project for that small block Chevy? Actually, welding is one of dad's better skills. TIG, MIG, arch, you name it. He loves to run a bead. And the motor is a 383 stroker that's been laying around. Way over 500 hp (pump gas) but we haven't decided what to put it in. He's got a 425 Buick Nailhead near completion so the SBC will likely continue to collect dust. We may weld up a top-strap for a future custom. Just realize, that has very little to do with welding skill. You basically puddle the top of the frame and mill it to the desired spec. The trick is to use the right type of weld and correct settings. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

That cylinder looks warm! Cool watching this one go together Lee. Thanks! Hey whit, I may resemble that lawn mower remark! Always wanted to convert one of the zero turns to a soled buggy . That may be the next pictorial that Lee does

n-n-n-n-eed... m-m-m-ore... p-p-p-ictures Lee, I bet he and his Dad are out in the shop RIGHT NOW working on the front sight! Wish I could be a fly on that wall, and smell that machine lube, hear that lathe turning, and listen to some 80's music!
