Guys the $4500 price tag is for an all the options custom. I am not trying to flame Mic or his prices as he is highly respected in the lever gun community. I am just wanting a field gun.
From what I have read most 475 loads run in the low 40's. One article (it may have been Mic's) recommended keeping pressures <40 for longevity.

I have never run my .475 Linebaugh that low in the pressure department. That said, 1,000 fps loads out of a levergun would probably run around 1,300 fps (estimated), and would be every bit the hammer that full-bore .475 loads out a revolver are. Again, no need to push them hard.

I guess my information on the pressure numbers were wrong. Looks like a 40K 475 would be pretty anemic. Doesnt seem like it would justify the expense. May have to try to come up with a Ruger #3 to barrel.

It would be nice to have a handy little carbine in .475. Loaded light it will be like a hot load out of a revolver, and I can say with certainty that it will be really effective on game.

Well, 40K isn't far off peak SAAMI. The 475 Linebaugh is rated at 48,000 PSI, so out of an 18" barrel you could easily push 420's to 1,300 and stay around 40K (maybe even 1,400 fps). The animal sure won't know the difference, assuming there is any. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Most of an ounce of lead is going to tear stuff up, even at low velocity.

Most of an ounce of lead is going to tear stuff up, even at low velocity. It will, but a low-velocity .475 load out of a revolver will achieve the velocity of a full-power load when shot from a rifle, which makes this a win-win situation in my opinion! ;D

When I talked to Reg, he was doing full length 45/70 cases with the 475 bullet on the long actions. You could fire 475 Linebaugh loads in the same gun. www.leveractions.com/leveractions.htm

As an FYI. My 454 Puma 20" barrel pics up 400fps over my 4" Redhawk 454 with the same load. I suspect the 480 would be similar. So, in effect, a 480 Puma should equal or exceed mv of a typical 475 wheelgun. The main issue is finding the right combination of OAL and boolit nose profile for reliable feeding in the levergun. And of course finding a 480 Puma.

The amount of increase in a carbine, over a revolver is purely a matter of burning rate and pressure..if your powder is one of the faster ones, and your pressures are under 40,000, you will see negligable increases in a 20" barrel.. Certainly NOT in the 400 fps range, which is easily doable with hot .454 loads.. The expansion ratio of the larger-diameter .475 will make appreciable increases even less-likely. Its all a matter of physics, gents...
