I have a Gallagher 475 on the way and I am thinking I need a lever gun to go with it. I know Forkin and Mick do them but I am too cheap to send it to them. Any of you hobby smiths done one? Barrel, chambering, breech face, and maybe a little carrier work seems to be all that would be necessary. I hear keeping loads in the 40,000 range would be prudent.

Have you seen the Puma/Rossi .480s?

I prefer Marlins. I have read the OAL of the 475 makes it problematic in the Puma 480.

I think Lloyd Smale has mentioned that he has one.

They aren't making the Rossi .480 anymore. Used is all you'll find.

WoW, love the idea of a 50ae model 94 (or 475Lfor that matter) but the 4500+ price tag seems well out of my means, am I reading the order form right? "Package MCC: Marlin Custom Conversion, includes most work outlined above (as appropriate) and conversion to any of various chamberings (refer to, What is Possible with a Marlin, with premium barrel and a set of custom loading dies (where necessary): If I own the required reamer set and commercial loading dies are available: $4500 If I do not own the required reamer set and commercial loading dies are available: $4800"

$4500 was my hesitation. I may see what he would do the basic barreling and action work for and do the rest myself.

I prefer Marlins. I have read the OAL of the 475 makes it problematic in the Puma 480. Can't figure out why this would be. Puma also produced a .454 lever gun and the .454 and the .475 have the same approximate OAL. Strange.

Don't want to offend the man or his work. A Marlin converted to 475 costs $4,500.00 ? A Couple of guys with proprietary designs are building them from the ground up for a couple k less.

Can a Marlin action handle the kind of pressures that a 475 would generate? I've heard that 45,000 psi is about it for these actions. Also heard the Winchester actions are much stronger.

The SAAMI spec max pressure for the .475 Linebaugh is 50,000 psi. It doesn't need to be loaded that hot.
