Funny you should post this. When I ordered my 416 JDJ barrel from SSK back in 1999, JD had just finished the first 950 (which is likely the 50 pound version shown here). We talked for over an hour with much of the conversation centering around the 950. Hung the phone up and decided I had to have one. So dad and I discussed building one on an up-sized version of our 50 BMG action. Pac Nor makes the barrel and 20mm brass is available through surplus channels. We'd also make the reamers and dies, with bullets being out of lathe turned brass. The muzzle brake would be done in-house too. Never figured out the stock part, but we would've come-up with something. Unfortunately that project never got off the ground. Seems to me we needed a Class III stamp for the round. Plus converting 20mm brass to conventional primers was going to be a pain (I used to know what it took to do so, but can't remember now). A 600 Overkill is still on the project list though. Maybe in '12. Thanks for the link. -Lee www.singleactions.com

If there was ever a need for a caldwell lead slead.....
Sorry, hand me a .500 whatever handgun and no problem, but even a .30-06 makes me hope the box of ammo I brought is only a 20rd. Guess I'm weird like that.
Biggest I ever shot was a Ruger #1 in .458 Lott with irons. The guy loading the ammo was not shy and it was a 500gr over a casefull of whatever made it go fast.
No thanks!

As I have said before a Ruger #1 Tropical in 458 was a LOT for me. In the comments when I posted this there was mention of the last guy shooting it (dude with ponytail) getting a broken rib shooting it.

If I remember correctly, we have 24 ribs if you count the short ribs, so he should be good for one box of ammo.

Ouch. I agree with subsonic...factory 30.06 out of my dad's old 03-A3 is all I want...and I'm thinking 10 rounds is plenty.

You have to watch guns like this....they can hurt you. Same with the 600 Overkill I plan to build this year. On a braked 12 pound rifle, it still has 250 foots pounds of recoil (about the same as this 50 pound 950). Detached retinas aren't uncommon at these levels. When it come to big-bore benchrest, 50 BMG is still my favorite: -Lee www.singleactions.com

Lee: your 'favorite' is still way over the top for most of us. I shot a 50 once and while that recoil wasn't too bad the blast was horrendous!

I watched a 9 year old girl happily shooting her father's single shot BMG last fall. She was shooting so quickly that he had to stop her so that there would be ammo available for other shooters.
I still wanted no part of it. I have never seen the value in imposing pain upon ones self.

I still wanted no part of it. I have never seen the value in imposing pain upon ones self. So you wouldn't shoot a 20 gauge shotgun? Cause at 41 pounds and with an efficient brake, that's about how mine recoils. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

I agree with Lee, Me, 140lbs and my 130lb Wife have both shot numerous .50BMG's with no problem at all. The guns are so heavy and speaking of the Barrett M107/M82, the very long recoil spring spreads the recoil impulse out longer. We've both shot the M99 Barrett single shot rifle, and I myself have also shot both the Grizzly and the Armalite AR50 .50 BMG's with no problems, as a matter of fact, my Ruger No.1 SS .458 Lott kicks sharper and harder to me and I won't let her shoot itcause I don't want it hurting her. Guess recoil is one of them strange things in life where it affects everyone differently. .50's are alot of fun, I wish I could afford one or a Anzio 20mm! :-D
