Personally went quite a while with only a pair of FA 475s. That changed this year with a Bowen Nimrod 475 and a Linebaugh 475. They look good with my 6 inch FA..

32gr h110 behind a 500gr is getting into .500 s&w territory. That is more than getting into .500s&w territory! It is one more grain of H110 than is listed as maximum load in my Lyman reloading manual for the 500S&W. A 500GR jacketed FP, with an OAL 2.065 using 31 GR H110, gives around 1450 fps and has 49,800 P.S.I according to my manual ! Even with the reduced pressure from using a hard-cast bullet I would question one could get the pressure down below 40,000 PSI.(the maximum safe pressure for the 500Linebaugh) and that's before reducing case capacity down to the 500Linebaugh. Might be OK load wise in a 500Maximum but I wouldn't push a normal 500Linebaugh that hard.

anymore with his health problems about the only thing he shoots out of his are trail boss loads. Im a bit of a baby too fermin, when he used to bring the full house loads out or bring out one of his linebaugh maximuns id run and hide like a little girl. Personaly none of my linebaugh guns get shot much over a 1100 fps and i wouldnt give a plugged nickle for a maximum gun! he used to shame with when we were shooting our 50aks too. Some of his loads made shooting a 458 seem like a picnic. checked my loading data and i believe i made a bit of mistake. Looking at it i think it was 450s with 32 grains he was shooting. Ive personaly loaded and shot a bunch of 450s with 30 grains and brass falls right out. The 500 never had the tendency to show pressure signs like sticky brass ect on top end loads like the 475 does. My linebaugh built 475 will shoot 27 grains of 110 with a 420 and show no pressure signs but bump it to 28 and im pounding out brass. My FA 475 will do the same with 400s and the same loads. I dont recall ever having sticky brass with any 500 load but maybe its because my manhood gives out before the gun does. By the way i remember a few years back a guy from alaska used to visit these fourms and wasnt well liked. He shot the linebaughs alot and shot them at levels that even scared me. I remember one picture that went around that he had a 500 come back in his face and broke his nose. I believe he was shooting 440s with 38 grains of 110 out of a 4 inch gun he built himself. He claimed no pressure signs even at that level. How long his guns held up to that level is questionable at best though. He got ran off the fourms before that was ever found out.

I can give a few comparisons between the 500JRH and the 500 Smith. The JRH with 32 grains of H110 behind a 440 grain cast will fly at 1,462fps from a 6” barrel and a 465 cast in front of the same charge will do 1,431fps. With the 500 Smith you need to go 35 grains of H110 behind a 440 grain cast to scoot at 1,410fps from a 5” non-ported Smith and with a 465 grain cast with the same charge it goes 1,348fps. The aforementioned loads are for serious events no doubt, as the felt recoil in the JRH is just a tad unpleasant. The 500 Smith loads are very pleasant compared to those JRH loads. I really dislike H110 or WW296 powder in max loads because of the “sharp” snap to it and much prefer 4227/N110 or N120 – even compressed AA1680 is better IMHO. The 500L using 32 grains of H110 in front of 450 grain cast shouldn’t be too bad but probably not a pleasant load by any means in a light 5-gun, but you could push it a little more if the desire was there. Now the 500L Maximum can be a joy to shoot but there again you can get into self abuse if you have a mind to, as a 440 grain bullet from that bad boy coasting along at 1,546fps is just downright nasty and got a chuckle out of John when I spoke to him about that particular outing. He didn’t see any good reason to go there and I haven’t returned there and have no plans for doing so again. I graduated from HS in ’62 mentally challenged in many areas including “felt recoil” but I must say I’ve wised up to “felt recoil” in a hurry once I crossed into the 0.5” bore arena. Just to prove that statement, the last "custom" revolver I'll ever have built is being put together as I type by Gary Reeder in 44 Magnum no less.

Axe, I know you have a lot of guns. You have some nice ones too judging by the pics. But I have seen 4 Reeder guns and would use them to tack up wanted posters before I'd shoot em. Cylinder to barrel gaps in excess of .006", cylinders that have way too much movement in all directions and worst of all the god awful scrolling and engraving all over the damn gun!! I just can't see what few others do

Reeder has built 2 500s for me and they both shoot great, and I happen to really like the way they look,... here's some pictures. Reeder is building my latest custom right now, a 500S&W on his own frame if it turns out like I hope it just might be my last custom I have built.

To each his own!!!!! I just looked at his web site and see a new larger frame for the 500 S&W. He has a Dinosaur engraved on it ?? I just couldnt see myself shooting a gun with a Dinosaur engraved on it.------ unless I was playing a part in a childrens cartoon??

Absolutely! Don't think I have ever liked everything anyone has ever done. I spent a little time in the anti everything Reeder camp. Then I stumbled upon a deal on a Reeder 5 shot 45 Colt. Turned out to be a VERY nice gun. Then the Dawgs gave me a Reeder #5. I traded for a 500L Ultimate Backup and the Dawgs gave me a 500L African Hunter. I cut a deal on the first of many Reeder TC barrels.. Spent a little time on Reeder's board. It was a done deal. My anti Reeder days were over long before DougF gave me a 475 Ultimate Bisley Can't say I like everything Reeder but then I've seen examples of other top drawer gunsmiths that I didn't care for either. I'll have me one of the T-REX things one day too! Maybe I'll get an extra special deal because of the etchings... So long as there are no naked people on it.

Here's a well know secret shhhhhhh. If you order any of Reeders revolvers and, here's the secret part, ask him to build it without any engraving . He will do as you ask

Absolutely WRONG!! HE WILL NOT build a gun without the silly engraving. I have forwarded e mails from him describing his reasons. AGAIN, HE WILL NOT produce a gun without engraving according to his own e mails. Here's a challenge that will prove my contention. Anyone having a Reeder single action WITHOUT the silly engravings, PLEASE POST A PIC !!!
