Do the standard methods of Tweaking large bore revolvers also work for a single-six? Stuff like matching ammo to throat size, fire lapping, oversize base pins, etc..
Or is it a whole different ball of wax?
For what its worth, my jag and patches go down the bore with more resistance than my .22 rifles, which would suggest that the bore is plenty tight. I dont have a rod or lead slugs small enough to slug the bore, but the throats are a loose fit on a .224" jacketed bullet. .2245" .22lr ammo is a "push" fit.

subsonic,
#4 buckshot makes a good slug to do your bore and chamber throats with.
How does the gun shoot now? If it shoots good, don't mess with it you got a good one.

Never could get mine to shoot to my liking. Eventually, I built a new cylinder from scratch and installed a Shilen barrel (0.222", 0.2225" throats). Now this one tears ragged little holes (with good ammo though...the Thunderbolts are for plinking). Throats that are matched to the bore and correct ammo will help considerably. -Lee www.singleactions.com

It only shoots 3-4" with cheap ammo, best of 1.5" @25 yds for 18 shots with expensive match ammo. This is after testing 7 kinds I had on hand. The Wolf Match Target shot the best. My MKII would easily stay under an inch with this ammo and does 1.5" with cheap stuff.
On further investigation, it seems like throats might be on the large side of .225", maybe .2255"
I found some ammo that might be big enough, but only at the rear portion of the bullet. Driving band is .224"
Lee, did you ever try the Paco tool?

My Old Model Super Single-Six had a LR cylinder with 5 different chamber diameters. The smallest was .254" and the largest was .2555" IIRC. I sent them to a gunsmith who reamed them all out to the same size as an experiment to see if it would help. Before it would shoot a 3 to 4 shot group with 2 to 3 fliers consistently. Group size oh, around 2 3/4 or so average. This is with the ammo it liked. After it shoots all the rounds into groups of around 2 3/4" to 3" ......... but they're round.
The bore measures .222" to .2225" depending on how I hold my face.
What I figure is I just need a new cylinder with proper .22 LR chambers. I haven't looked yet as I've been fighting health issues and therefore short on money.
I have some of the ammo I used in my pistols original tests altered by a Paco's Tool I borrowed. I haven't tried it at the range yet. This is just an experiment as I see no benefit to having to alter ammo to shoot accurately. It's a PITA and would be awkward out in the field if one ran out.

I put my Paco Accurizer tool where I wouldn't misplace it last year. Unfortunately, I no longer have any idea where that "safe and secure" place is. I guess I'll soon have to tear the house apart.

How much trouble/cost would it be to sleeve the chambers and re-bore vs a new cylinder? Seems like it could be a wash...? Maybe more difficult to get the alignment right?

Way over my head but I'd think that, unless you are like Lee with skills and inhouse tools, while getting the Ruger up to speed you will easily spend the cost of a nice used 22LR FA. Might even get to the price of a new FA at retail...

Sleeving is an option and if done right alignment isn't a big problem. I should add on my cylinder I cut it a little different than most. The standard 22 chamber is bored straight thru and as a result the throat region tends to be a little big (it has to be so the chamber isn't excessively tight). Usually they run 0.224 - 0.225". I held the throat area at 0.2225" though and honed the case portion of the cylinder a tad larger. It yields good fit for the bullet as it exits the bore. Also provides room for the case to feed and expand upon firing. Kind of a screwy process, but I wanted to see how it worked. -Lee www.singleactions.com

I wondered about the idea of rechambering a .17Mach2 cylinder so as to get proper throats. Of course those cylinders are not too common......

Lee,
There was a forum member (can't remember his name) over on Leverguns and The Ruger Forum who bragged about his Uberti made .22LR single action every time the subject of Ruger Single-Sixes came up. He said the LR cylinder was actually made with chambers like a center fire or a .22 Mag cylinder and due to that produced superior accuracy than those used by Ruger and others. One of these days I'm going to find a dealer with one of these Ubertis on his shelf and take a look see. And if they are like that I just might trade the Ruger off on it.

I've heard the same thing on Ubertis but have never handled one. I'm curious to know if they actually cut a chamber. Maybe another member has one or knows. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Gunbroker shows fa .22s are quite pricey. I won't spend that much on my single-six, because I don't have that much to spend!
Looks like I'm going to try the paco tool and larger ammo.

Sent mine to Clements for his single six accurizer work. Mine shoots 1" at 25 yds on a good day. Also had action, freee spin pawl, grip fit (man that feels nice with custom grip!) And bead blast.
