Sean,
Your avatar looks to have a Hartebeast in it or something like that anyway. Do you have a fullsize picture of that to share and maybe a story? I can barely make out what looks like a sixgun in the front but its hard to see in a super small picture. Is this a hunt that I missed the story on at some point??? Thanks

In March/April 2006 I went to S.Africa with a group of handgun hunters with Gary Reeder. I took 11 animals during a 2 week period, 7 days of hunting in the East Cape, S.A and 7 days around Rooiport, S.A., 2 of the animals (Red Hartebeest, Bushbock) were taken with my Reeder 475 Max the other 9 were with TC Encore pistols. Not much of a story to the Hartebeest we were driving around and spotted the Red Hartebeest about 80 yards inside the brush ,we quickly got out of the truck and stalked from brush to brush to within 60 yards and I put a 405gr cast WFN behind the front shoulder,the hartebeest bucked and ran about 140 yards and went down.The pic is not good ,I had a new camera and the white adjustment is to high. I do have a good bushbuck story for later ;D  |

This hunt was in the East Cape of S.Africa,in the Baavian area. I had been looking for bushbuck for 3 days and had no luck so the PH decided to try hunting at a pond at evening time,thinking that a bushbuck would come to drink at dusk. This pic is of the pond and the pic was taken from on top of the dam looking across the 5 acre pond to the far side where we THOUGHT the bushbuck would show up.  So there we are on top of the dam with my back against a tree,in the shade of the tree,I have a TC Encore-pistol 375 GNR #2 w/ 2x7scope on top of shooting sticks in the ready position and my 475 Maximum is in a strong side holster. The PH and tracker are on there bellies laying on the dam looking across and scanning everywhere. I am scanning the brush at the edges of the pond and notice the PH looking behind me below the dam and so I turn and look also and there at the bottom of the dam is a bushbuck coming up a small trail that runs below the dam. So there I am with a TC Encore on the shooting sticks pointing in the opposite direction and the bushbuck is about 15' below me headed in my direction,so I do the only thing I know ;D , I slooowly draw my 475 Maximum with my right hand and turn to the right and line up the sights on the shoulder of the bushbuck ( I still have my TC Encore in my left hand and no way to get both hands on the revolver) at the shot the bushbuck hits the ground,I spined it. Considering I was shooting one handed I can live with the shot hitting about 5" high. The pic was taken on top of the dam and to the right and down is were the bushbuck was. Sean  |

Personally, I would have let the Encore sit on the ground to hold onto that one with both hands, I've heard they kick like a mule

Sometimes you do what you have to do. I would have never thought to aim low in that situation either but I will now probably after this story  Not something that would likely cross your mind in the split second that you had to make the shot. Thanks for sharing!! Take care. GS |

How nasty of a load were you running in that 475 Max? I know you like them big and nasty but how big and nasty? What do you think of that Reeder compared to your other custom big bores?

The load was a 405gr WFNGC at 1500 fps .This gun had a 8" barrel at the time,now it is 6",I had Gary cut it down earlier this year.This is on his frame and the gun is very accurate with 375gr , 405gr and 425 gr LFN.I am shooting 425gr LFNGC in it now. the gun shoots and balances very nicely. Nothing shoots as nice or balances as well as my Alan Harton gun. Gary's max frame is very well made and the grip shape does an excellent job of reducing felt recoil. Sean |

I just now loaded a handful of max 26.0gr of H110 375gr LFNPB loads in 480 brass to run out of my Freedom Arms for my next outing. I am suspecting they will run close to 1400fps in my 4 3/4" barrel, not my normal shooting plans (I generally run my loads at sub sonic speeds) but in honor of your beast I figured it was time to climb on the bull as I like to do a couple of times a year. While I rarely enjoy shooting max loads I have to admit a good group shot at absolute max is really satisfying...
