Getting close to delivery.
Looks like except for the handful of brass comin with the gun, I'll be making my own out of .50 Alaskan. I have been unable to find a source for properly headstamped brass.
CH-4D dies are recommended, I'm going to call them this afternoon. Any other recommendations for dies?
I have primers (CCI Large Rifle mag for the Alaskan based cases, CCI Large Pistol mag for the Hornady 500 Max cases)
I was recommended to try to pick up Alliant 1680 powder for the heavy loads, and 4227 / 2400 / Blue Dot for light loads.
I'm looking for recommendations on bullets, commercially available. CPB 525 is already on the list.
And a recommendation for a good shooting glove. I have Cabelas glove with a gel insert now, but I don't know where that ranks.
Anyone have advice, or knowledge born of trial and error?

OH! You are talking uncharted territory for this puppy John. I've often wondered what it would be like to have either a 475 or a 500 Max but I think I'll stick to the 414 Supermag. I'm too old to wear a front sight in the middel of my forehead.

CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG....BUT I BELIEVE YOU CAN USE 500 LINEBAUGH DIES...1.4" DIES FOR THE MAX LENGTH CASE...1.6"

How about 2 pairs of PAST gloves and a roll of duct tape.... Put one pair on your hands and duct tape the second to your forehead! ;D FWIW I loaded some 350s and 500s in a 500 S&W... First rounds out of the gun the 350s seemed to have more recoil.... A few rounds later and it was obvious that the 500 recoiled harder... That concussion to the face from the 350s was just a bunch of hot air...

CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG....BUT I BELIEVE YOU CAN USE 500 LINEBAUGH DIES...1.4" DIES FOR THE MAX LENGTH CASE...1.6" I don't have 500 dies ATM. the Max will be my first .512 bore. However, looks like the hornady 500 set will be my best bet in price per pound. my local shop has a box of 348 winchester on the shelf with 15 years of dust on it - anyone still have a set of form dies around? If i could borrow a set of form dies, and get that brass for little to nothing...I know its way more work than trimming 50 alaskan, but hey, what else am I gonna do while drinking beer late at night? I won't be putting powder or primers in cases, that's for sure. (there are rules) Looks like i might pick up some trailboss or titegroup for the entry level loads. I think my local shop had one or the other last time I was in, cant recall. Mt Baldy has a 510 gn slug thats 2/3 the price of CPB 525. I'll be checking availability tom. And Axe -I'll be wearing a stiff brimmed straw hat. the hat has a chainsaw kickback mark (chain brake worked properly, so not cut, just smashed), maybe I'll add a little more character. My dad already told me he'd shoot it once, no matter how bad it looked like I was hurt.

I liked the idea of having a set of case forming dies on the shelf too... Tie your hat on and go to Midway and price a set... When your vision comes back order some brass from Starline... FWIW I still want a set of case forming dies for the 475L and 500L... Just something about these obscure cartridges that drvies me to want more than one avenue for brass...

I can't order brass from starline. this is a 500 MAX, not a 500. Apparently there was an intial run of 25K pieces of hornady 500 max brass, and it's all gone. And yeah, I looked at the case forming die set. It's a little out of hand. Thats why I was wanting to borrow a set. Make up a 100 brass, and send it back home.

Will the standard 500L case form set make the 500 Max too? If that is case I think you should either spring for the case form set or just sell me the gun and I'll buy the case form set...

I'll trim Alaskan brass long before I buy that $600 case forming set. And I'll deal with lubing cases instead of buying a $400 carbide size die.

CH-4D dies are at the house now, and I just ordered some 450 Keith and 510 FN from Mt. Baldy.
Once this "Things I need from Midway" list stops growing, I'll get a few more things from them.
Jack recommended 1680. Apparently the discontinued W680 was the "go to" powder for this beast. Accurate's website shows 50 grains AA1680 as max with a CPB 435 Grain bullet. 50 grains of powder in a handgun is a lot. Max load list velocity as 1555 fps with the 435.

Sound like 500 S&W power with 1/2 the gun weight... This IS NOT going to be a good thing...

Had a little package from Mount Baldy when I got home today. It's one thing to look at numbers, it's another to hold these huge chunks of lead in the hand. Left to right: .358 173 gn, .512 510gn, .512 450gn, .430 255gn If anyone knows where to get a 350 grain .510-.512 JHP bullet, please let me know.
