I'd use the Past shooting glove and MidSouth if they carry what you want will be less expensive than Midway.

I starting cutting down .50 Alaskan brass last night. This will be an exercise. I have a small (1" max) tubing cutter that I'm using to take it to 1.61-1.62 or so. I'll do the rest on the case trimmer. Probably going to be worth the time to set up a simple jig to set the position of the tubing cutter, measuring each time could get old fast. I had a 1/2" pin that I'm dropping down into the case to support the case walls. The first try without it, I ended up with a case that looked a little more oval than round.

Wouldn't the sizer die take care of the oval shaped case?

Wouldn't the sizer die take care of the oval shaped case? Yes, but I'd rather work smarter than harder. It's a lot easier to cut a flexible material with something behind it. I'm also planning on a HELLUVA crimp to keep 500+ grain bullets in place. No need to work harden the brass by smashing it and resizing it before I ever shoot it.

You keeping a running list of how much you are investing in this project? Perhaps developing an understanding of why and how they can charge so much for a case forming die set?

You keeping a running list of how much you are investing in this project? I know I'm over 2K, but I THINK I'm still under 3K. $500 for the base max and around $2100 for the conversion. $120 for dies Custom leather pending. I hate to count powder, primers, brass and bullets toward a project, but I have probably bought about $300 worth of stuff just for this gun. Perhaps developing an understanding of why and how they can charge so much for a case forming die set? The case forming set is nasty becasue of all the steps involved. Take a look at a piece of .348 Win brass - there isn't much there that looks like a straight walled pistol cartridge. My .50 Alaskan (also based on the .348) cutdown isn't any different than making .41 special brass out of a a .414 SM case. The way I'm going about it may seem labor intensive, but it's actually gonna be faster than trying to grind off a half inch of case with my manual case trimmer. Jack told me yesterday there is a chance I could have my BOOMER for the 4th... It's complete, and he was loading the proof rounds... You guys know anyone who would volunteer to PROOF this thing? IIRC, proof loads are typically 180% of max published pressures. EDIT: Maybe you just pack it full of blue dot to proof it. I heard a tall tale once thats how ROA's were proofed...

I just sent one to Huntington for the same conversion and he said he was holding one in hand that was ready for testing. He told me right at 6 months to wait.

Original estimated completion date on mine was end of May. I'll have to check my notes on when I actually sent it out. EDIT: I shipped it first week of December last year. A little got tacked on to the time since it took a trip to Mahovsky's...
What's on your build sheet?
Mine went with a Bisley .45 Colt as the down payment and donor for Bisley parts.

I had already fitted a bisley frame, hammer, and trigger to my maximum. From there it will be fitted with an octagon 6.5"-7"(I told him to make the call) stainless barrel and cylinder. Front sight based machined in the ocatagon with screwed in interchangeable blades with brass bead and V-blade rear(this will be an hunting gun). Cylinder will be stainless and the whole gun hard chromed. All the rest of my conversions are case colored/blued so wanted a gun I try for elk with next year.

Spoke to Jack again today.
Proofing was discussed. The proof load is a 525 grain bullet at 1550 fps. No further details will be revealed. the gun is built for 40K psi "all day fun", the proof load is 50K psi.

How does the max compare to the 510 GNR? I have had a 510 for a few years. Dont care to shoot a lot of the 435's but with the 350's it isnt too bad. We got our last batch of 350s from cast performance. www.castperformance.com/Detail.bok?no=47
