Skeeter Skelton would have chosen the .357 Magnum. For me, I think it would be that or .22 LR or Magnum. I'd have to think really hard to choose between the two rimfires. It's good to see some of you guys coming out in support of the "lowly" 22 rimfire(s). I fully expected to get flamed for that.

.
Well, I am surprised at the total lack of support for the 44.
But you learn something every day.

Stump you've been in California too long. Come breath some fresh, free mountain air that 9mm fascination will pass:-) Rob...You're right, I have been here WAAAAAY TOO long!!! If it's any consolation, I have more 45 Colt chambered firearms than any other cartridge in the safe!!! If it weren't for the fact that I shoot my G34 like it was magically made for me, I'd definately choose the 45 Colt hands down. Fact is, this fantastic plastic contraption is the most accurate pistol I have in the safe and only one of 2 9mm's I own, but after hitting an 18" steel plate 2 times out of 10 from 372 lasered yards away (witnessed), I can't in good conscience pick my cherished 45's if I was allowed only 1 pistol cartridge. Good thing it hasn't come down to this, because I'm off to the range in a little bit to shoot my 9mm and some of my 45's today (and a 357 and a 22LR and a couple 22WMR's and a 223 and a... ) ;D Stump PS - Did that cat issue ever get sorted out? Send me another e-mail.

. Did Skeeter Skelton ever convert a 44 Special to 357 Magnum ? Did Skeeter Skelton ever write an article entitled "My Friend, the .44 Special" in which he said he'd take that caliber as his only one? "If I had to choose just one gun to side me for the rest of my life, be it handgun, rifle, or shotgun, I would select a .357 Magnum revolver." - Skeeter Skelton

Art, I think you must mean, convert a 357 to 44 special!

Okay guys.... We've spouted all these preferences.. Now... How many of your favorite are you holding?... Without counting I can tell you that I have more 44s than any other centerfire... Most likely more 44s than the rest of the centerfire revolvers combined!

I have more .44s than anything else, for a good reason that has nothing to do with caliber preference.

. Think Skeeter was known for converting 357's to 44 Special. Was just wondering where all the 44 Specials that Skeeter must have converted to his "favorite" 357 are hiding. Who has that secret collection ? Gun enthusiasts quote Skeeter's favorite load for the 44 Special just like they do Elmer's favorites for the 44 Special and 44 Magnum. Am sure in his many years of writing that Skeeter published loads for the 357, but have not come across the gun enthusiast who routinely quotes Skeeter's 357 load from instant memory. Sure I will hear from scores of them before tonight is over. Alas, I concede to the non-44 lovers. In helping to keep the peace, I will gladly take all the Colt, USFA, and Ruger 44 Specials and all the Smith & Wesson and Ruger 44 Magnums that y'all don't need or want and will charge just a small nominal fee for my services. .

Oh yeah! I've got more 44s than anything else.. But I don't like them best! Like that is going to hold water.. I don't think number is the question... Question is what would remain if all others were gone..

The 44 Specials are starting to stack up, though.

I have to agree with Boge, as the 22 would be my first pick. Probably the Ruger mark II.
As far as a centerfire cartridge. Well, that is pretty hard to pick but here is how I think of things.
The 357, would probably be the logical choice, as 357/38Spl are everywhere! The 38-40, I have an affinnity for, combined with a 40S&W convertable Blackhawk, It too would be hard to pass up. The 41 mag, Great cartridge, but probably not The 44 mag, 2nd only to the 357 for convienence, If it was a Redhawk 4" or 5 1/2". I'd be hard pressed to not grab it. 45 Colt, my first love. Preferred over the 44 475 Linebaugh. I can tell you my wife would grab hers no question. ( Yes my wife shoots a 475 Linebaugh for a handgun and a 338 Winchester for a rifle.) The other advantage is you can still shoot 45 ACP in them.... As bullets 500 Linebaugh. My second love. Nothing like taking the biggest hammer. Really a big 45 colt in attitude.
Logic would say whatever you had the most bullets for, or a 357/44. However my heart would want to grab the 500 or 45 colt.
How many? most 22's

Groo here There are only 3# that really fill the bill.. 357,41, and 44 mag -- rifles can be had for them easily [except the 41] All respond to longer barrels well ,, All are accurate enough to hunt or SD with. All WILL work on most game animals,,,

Well, the question was which cartridge would you pick if you were limited to only one. "Favorite cartridge" is an entirely different matter. At least with Skeeter Skelton, we don't have to speculate as to his answer on the question at hand. He answered that question in print. I can't disagree with his logic. Thankfully, though, we don't live in that world and I can have lots of other cartridges, too, including the .44s, which I love. ;D

If I were limited to just one revolver cartridge I would pick .45 Colt. It is fun to shoot, even with the strongest loads, you have a large selection of bullet weights & styles and powders for reloading, it also handles black powder loads with ease, it is accurate with almost all bullet weights, it is a great self defense round and there is a little history associated with this cartridge.

P.S. Boge: I have lived in Tennessee and it is a great state but I still cannot understand or comprehend your selection of .22 rim fire as your caliber of choice..............Just kidding, actually .22 RF was my 9th choice...............on a list of ten, just behind a .177 caliber...........pellet gun.
