. While I have 45 Colts in various persuasions including five-shot Linebaugh conversions as well as 475 and 500 Linebaugh caliber handguns... Don't all the arguments for calibers other than the 44 depend either on handloaded ammo or custom ammo not readily available at the local store along the highway and, for the 45, that is kept segregated by which gun it is used in ? Whereas the 44 caliber's range of uses could all be done with commonly available store bought ammo and is easily kept separated by headstamp. And when we pass the Pearly Gates we won't have as much explaining to do with Elmer and Skeeter. We could still be using the proper loads of Unique and 2400 and bullets cast from a properly made 429421 mold. Ain't ya' gonna feel funny if St. Peter is wearing his copy of the Number Five in a George Lawrence holster and you have a... . Hey YOU started this argu....eehh discussion.. You stated that YOU were too lazy to change tool heads in your Dillon press and that your wife was sick and tired of casting so many bullets. Dont you dare try to interject common sense and reason into the picture with the old "factory available" line.

Pretty hard to beat the old 45 with good loads but I started out with the 44 maggie & although it would be a hard choice, that would be my pick. Having said that, I've probably taken as much big game with the 41 maggie as the 44.... I'll stick with the 44.
Hammer, you don't need another Dillon & you'd better be doing your own casting!

Currently keep a Dillon or two dedicated to each of the following
44 Special (two Dillons) 44 Magnum (two Dillons) 45 Colt 45 ACP.
As well as other Dillons for rifles and other handgun needs.
Actually do switch tool heads and shell plates between the 475 and 500 Linebaughs.
As for casting... Being an engineer my wife is very good with metals and alloys for casting bullets. I would just be goofing it up compared to her expertise. And she knows more about heat treating than anyone else I have ever met. The alloy she currently favors reaches peak hardness at 21 days after casting.
But just imagine that you were running short on space and needed the existing bench space for other needs. Like airplane parts or another Spolar shotshell loading machine dedicated to short-chambered 16 gauge paper shells.

Hell right now Im just wishing I had your current "problems". I have A Dillon 550 dont have a 475 or a 500 so scratch that, A single stage press for rifles and a couple of Mecs 1 for 20 and 1 for 12. And my wife is a RN/case manger for a health insurance company and spent 4 years working AGAINST the lead industry, Remember BULL X??

Not quite sure you read my original statement correctly.
Think the original statement was testing a hypothetical, not an actual existing situation.

Tonight after she finishes casting some more LBT WFN 511 and 476 caliber bullets and fixing a fried whole catfish dinner with blackberry cobbler...
I will ask my wife,
hypothetically speaking of course,
what she would do if one of our children were to ever marry a lazy person.

Wow - a wife that is in charge of your lead alloys. I do not believe that is common!

My wife is also in charge of keeping the Dillons properly lubricated.
Now, back to the original question...
A whole lot of folks supporting the 45 Colt with little to no support for the 44.
A little surprising.
Is that because of the large number who SASS cowboy shoot ?

If you shoot muzzle loaders Ill trade you some of my wifes hushpuppies for some of your wifes LBT 475's. An to original question, I have never shot a SASS shoot,I think for me outside of the versatility its probably a nostagia thing.

I know you guys are gonna pitch a fit, but if you REALLY only mean one caliber, I would have to say my 9mm..... My choice for todays world.

That's the one for me.

The only thing that keeps me from picking the 22LR is if I need the caliber in a self defense situation so in this case I'm going to pick the 357 Maggie as long as I can handload anyway.
