Someone talk me out of building one of these. I read an article on the round in Mauser 98's and got the itch. Brass is through the roof (if you can find it), bullets are scarce and over $1 per (again a problem because Woodleigh doesn't always stock them), and you have to know what you're doing to get them to feed properly (the rim is heavily rebated). Dies and reamers aren't a problem....I can make those in-house (especially since RCBS is $290 a set and JGS gets $200 on the reamer). Pac Nor still cuts the barrel though. All that being said, I have a pristine CZ-24 Mauser action that would make into a nice, traditional big-bore custom. Anyone work with this old round? I have plenty of similar performance guns (416 Rem, 416 Taylor, 450 Ackley, etc). Something about turn of the century British thumpers that grabs me though. -Lee www.singleactions.com

A sleek heavy thumper's lines couldn't stand a box that holds 6 Magnum rounds like John Buhmiller did. Maybe 6 Weatherbys, I'll have to check. He took a 378 and necked it up to 45. Roy copied it. Called it the 460. Of course you have to have a PH in Africa. Don't know about packyderm hunting in Va. I saw a 1924 Mannlicher 30'06 over the weekend. Sleek forend with tasteful schnabel, forend crosspin, rotary magazine, sort of a Linden cheekpiece, and a cheap new scope and mount that should both be removed. It was a tool, a working tool. Ebony gripcap and forend? No white lines I hope. And I know nice wood. No African Walnut allowed!!!!!!!!!

I'll probably do a standard box which will only hold 3 rounds. Curious though....does anyone offer a Buhmiller style magazine for 98's? -Lee www.singleactions.com

you could build a bolt action 444 and have as long a throat as you want. Brass and bullets would be no problem.

The 444 is a good round...in fact, I shoot it a lot in a stainless Marlin: Two things though: 1) The 444 can't approach 425 power, and 2) I really want to work with the old Westley Richards. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Hi too everybody
I Have just come back from a tour in Afghanistan and have not been on logged in much latly but i saw this tread i got exited . I just love this cartridge!!!
i had one made on a Husqvarna made 98 ( i have posted picatures here some time ago) about 3 yers ago and have been using it ever sense. There is a problem to find bullets and brass i bought mine from horneber i germany not cheep but good qualite. Bullets was another problem i have tryied Hawks 400 gr whit a jacket .035 thick and i was not impressed. I shoot a moose calf at a distence of some 30 meters and found the jacket against the skin on the opposite side, so now i make my own and haven't looked back sense.
Just ask if you want to know moore and i'll do my best to answer
Merry X-mas Mathias

Does the re-bated rim cause feeing issue? I am not sure if this is a internet rumor or not.

If you know what you're doing, getting them to feed isn't a problem. I've done 6mm-284's on Mausers and they function fine. Granted, the 425 is more rebated but I'm sure I can get it to work. In fact, cycling was never an issue with the original Westley Richards guns. Some of the lesser quality 425's had reliablity problems though. Mathias - other than Woodleighs, do you know of another source of 0.435" bullets? -Lee www.singleactions.com

Heck, it can't be any harder than a rimmed 348 Win on a Mauser 98. Now this one did take some work, but holds 3 in the magazine and functions like a dream: -Lee www.singleactions.com

That depends on how good the gunsmith is that makes the work. He how made mine said it took him over 60 hours just to make the feeding work. It was made to be used in India and for hunting dangerus game and what i can understand it had a good reputation, plus it was used by gamewardens in Africa atleast untill Kynoc stopped making amunition.
