OK, can you recommend a barrel? I was thinking a Green Mountain, not sure what twist rate they were adverising but I will check before I buy

I'd skip the 454 and do a 45 colt or a 475. You'll thank yourself later. Green Mtn makes a 45 cal tapered octagon barrel pistol blank for $100.

Green Mtn makes a 45 cal tapered octagon barrel pistol blank for $100. +1 Anything you would reasonably want to do with the 454, you can do with a high pressure .45 Colt. From what I see of most custom smiths, they don't offer a .454. A steady diet of top end, still within SAAMI spec, loads in the .454 can shake ANY revolver loose. Even Buffalo Bore doesn't load their 454 ammo to the top end of allowable pressure per spec. That should tell you something right there. After I swapped the base pin on my 454 BFR, I did not glue the ejector housing back on (just the stock screw-like a ruger) and shot some of the 454, 360 gn cast Buffalo Bore loads, and they were enough to SHEAR that screw inside of 20 rounds. MRI also doesn't use retaining patches on their frame screws like Ruger, it shook all of those loose as well. If you were a custom smith, would you want to produce a gun that per spec, can be loaded HOTTER than that?

Nothing against the 454, but that extra 15 - 20,000 PSI doesn't give you much more on the other end. Beats the hell out of the gun though. -Lee www.singleactions.com

Noted, but I in fact want to be able to shoot 454 due to the higher velocity stuff readily available due to my previous bad experiences with Buffalo Bore (the cracked gripframe in my 45 Colt)

I would love to see a picture of that cracked gripframe.

If I had a camera I'd love to post one, but it cracked right at the bend at the top of the frame where into the revolver frame (kind of a crappy description but it's the best way I can describe it) will use steel next time
