Acquired an Old Model SBH with about 5% finish left on it. Mechanically it is in great condition, bore, chambers are great too.
I already have an OM SBH in pristine condition. Thinking I could do something more than just a refinish but what?
Not much is off the table so caliber conversions or custom work are being considered.
Am looking for your ideas.....

Use it as is. You won’t regret it if you scratch it or whatever.

I bought one of those maybe 20 years ago when I lived north of Houston at a pawn shop. It even had the marks on the base of the grip frame as being used as a hammer. At the time I had met Alan Harton and had him build my first custom followed by many thereafter. I took it to him and he simply said something like "you don't want to pay me to do that". He followed with instructions on how to do the work and where to take it to get reblued (an old timer in Pasadena). I followed through, had some fun and it came out pretty well.

I suggest you shoot it 1st! If it shoots better than the one you had already, you might not want to rechamber. If it shoots about the same or not as well your choice is easy. I would Consider a .45 Colt if rechambering makes sense. You could have it throated to fit the bore nice and tight. Maybe one of Ronnie's custom grip frames, to lighten it up. A good shooting .45 colt is fun and Versatel. Mine is a 7.5 inch I got at a great price. I still want a 4 5/8ths, Blue for nice light revolver that can pack a real punch with Hand loads...tj

Send it to Larry Crow for the full accuracy package and barrel length cut to whatever length you don't already have. While there, have him mount one of paleroadster interchangeable front sight bases. Carefully sand it to 600 grit and rust blue it yourself. Be patient, because it's a slow process but is beautiful when done properly. If you really want it to be special, you can even make your own grips. There's also one of Ronnie's grip frames to consider.

Target it for accuracy is where I’d begin. Not all Ruger’s are equal. A super-shooter may well advance its owner’s skill. The refinish part, listen to boxhead as he quotes Alan Harton. David Bradshaw

Although I'm partial to the Aggie01 front sight base, this is exactly where I'd start. That being said, I might be inclined to a caliber conversion too. Anything from 45 Auto Rim/ACP/Super to Schofield, to the grand old Colt (I'd be inclined to the offbeat Schofield, myself). Of course, none of this is an original idea... mild to wild... singleactions.proboards.com/thread/31494/460-rowland-dealer-grip-frame singleactions.proboards.com/thread/32206/doe-460-rowland-blackhawksingleactions.proboards.com/thread/41020/horvath-om-flat-top-coltAll that being said, do yourself a favor and target the thing first. If it's a shooter it'll make you think twice before getting it bored out for fatter fodder.

Or you can send it and a blank check to Ronnie Wells. It'll be like Christmas as a kid wondering what is in the box!

I have a set of parts accumulated for a 45 Colt project down the road and when its time a gun like this would be the perfect starting point.
