I have a BFR and it comes with a base for mounting some type of optic. I want to try a scope for finding the best load, but I might like to try hunting with a red dot or other option. I can see the iron sights but not as good as optics. I have a 1911 with a red dot and I really like it and shoot well using it. I have not been in the woods with it at dawn or dusk so don't know how it works or a scope for that matter. All my hunting has been with iron sights, but want to know if I could improve with optics.

A 2x Scope is hard to beat for accuracy and utility in a single package.
But, the accuracy from my BFR 357 +P+ Magnum has been so great, a 2x Scope was an anchor limiting it's ability.
I just mounted a Simmons 4x for it's next bench session...

I have a 4x Burris on it now but have not been to the range yet. I would like to know how the optics works in poor light. Great to hear that the BFR shoots.

This is area not well addressed in the handgun hunting world- QD repeatable optic mounts that allow using irons
Spuhr built a Blackhawk with a Recknagel pivot mount. This is the most perfect solution but $$$
You could modify claw mounts for pistol use (I have a pre fit Heym set I'm considering for this) but parts like that are rare, and new claw mounts are $$$$
You can use a BoBro KOFN system, maybe mounted on the barrel. Pretty affordable but I don't think it's been done yet.
Alaska Arms rings on a Ruger Hunter model is the most economical solution, but you're limited to the Hunter and the rig gets kind of heavy with steel rings, scope, and a long ribbed barrel.
The FA titanium mount is see through for use with irons, but they're rare, expensive, and FA specific
If you're just looking to use a dot I'd try the KOFN system. If scope, Alaska Arms.
If all you want is to switch from a dot to a scope, then it's easy to put a picatinny rail on the pistol and get QD mounts.
For low light and longer ranges, a scope makes a huge difference and is worth the drawbacks.
Easiest solution is to carry two pistols, one with irons and the other optics.

with the 4x I saw the advantages of the higher magnification find a limit vs. the shaking of the vision, or more likely of my hand, always with long barreled sixguns, even from a rest_ today the 2x for me is more forgiving, at least on the target_

Look for a Burris 1.5-4x used on eBay, why they quit making that optic is beyond me. It is the best of all worlds for a hunting revolver, IMHO. Their current 2-7x is not a bad option although I’m guilty of never using more than 4x on my hunting revolvers. 4x allows you to wring out accuracy during load development out to 100 without issue, and everything below works well for hunting.

Carry 2 guns! I am going to pick up a 5 inch BFR Bisley tomorrow in 44 mag. Will put the brass BFR sight on from Fermin and put a optic on the 357 to get all bases covered. Thanks. What about Ultradot sights. How are they for hunting.

I was just reading this thread, and was surprised the Ultradot hadn't been mentioned, the Ultradot gen 1 is an excellent hunting optic, the gen 2 has a smaller dot, great for target/hunting, I actually prefer the gen 1 for hunting, but use both

I have a 2.5-8x Leupold that I greatly prefer for load testing & development but it’s a lot bigger optic than I prefer for hunting. I have the Weaver & it’s a good scope too but I prefer the Leupold 4x. I currently have that on a 41 Magnum to hunt with but have yet to use it. I’ve killed a couple does with my 357 similarly scoped. I’ve shot a few deer with Burris Fastfires & JPoints but much prefer the Trijicon SROs and green Holosuns. I feel confident to 75 yards with dot sights but any more & I’d take the scope. A Burris 1.5-4x sounds like a good option but I have no experience there. I am not a fan of auto-brightness & prefer dot sights over scopes generally. My plan this fall is to take one with a dot sight for up close & one with a scope for reach if required.

UltraDot's are superb for hunting handguns.
We are lucky in the we actually have several options nowadays,, as I can recall a time when it was irons or poor scopes for handguns.
