Thinking about adding a deep concealment sub compact backup gun for carry in an ankle holster. Anyone have any experience with the Ruger LCP 380? Any other suggestions for something reliable, but inexpensive to compliment my primary J frame I usually carry?

The Ruger LCP is a superb compact, lightweight backup gun. Percentage wise,, very very low on the return rate to Ruger. I prefer the LCP over the LCP II myself.

I don't own one so this is only hearsay. The ones with the black oxide coating seem to have a history of being susceptible to rust. Might happen quick in a boot.

I’ve had a good experience with the S&W M&P 380 Bodyguard. It has more of a DA trigger pull which I like for pocket carry.

The secret to an inside the boot gun or knife is Johnson's Paste Wax. Yep, the furniture wax. Grandpa showed me that. He also put it in his bullet lube. Very shiny bore that cleaned with just a patch.

I know I sound like a broken record here, but Charter Arms has had this application licked since 1964 as far as the form and weight, somewhat later for the stainless.
I carried a stainless, 3" Bulldog, or 2" Undercover extensively in the salty West Coast, Southeast and Southwest for years and sweated all over them. They WILL rust, but it wipes right off at the end of the day. A quick swab of bore and chambers once a week was enough.
I have nothing against Ruger's innovations with the LCR and LCRX, but the "innovations" aare mere copies of what Charter has done for decades and at substantially greater cost. To be fair, many of Charter's innovations were High Standard or Iver Johnson innovations, but even Bill Ruger Senior recognized the value and copied it for his own DA revolvers. The LCR and LCRX, not withstanding, because they went a step further and copied more of the cost-cutting innovations.
This is NOT meant to be a criticism of Ruger's efforts, It's a great gun - I HAVE one. But, dang, man, Charter has it down, the action is dead-reliable and they are amazing on support.

The LCP is not a revolver. It's a tiny semiautomatic.
While many do enjoy the Charter arms guns, my primary ccw is a Smith j frame. Either a 38sp or 357.
I wouldn't mind getting a Bulldog target

Had a 32 seecamp. Got tired of loading those tiny cases with those little Silvertips and foolishly traded it off.

So was everyone in Intelligence. Nice and small. Carried it in a Leasome "Special Dick". If you got patted down, most men avoided the area it road in! Especially Islamic men.

You might have a look at the Kahr CM9. Might be slightly larger/heavier than the Ruger, but it does shoot a 9mm para instead of the 380. I have a Kahr P9 and it has been reliable and accurate for me.

Used to carry a G27 in the Apache Renegade ankle holster for a few years; doable. Even better would be the Sig P938; slim, small, lightweight and 9mm Para; 6+1 or 7+1 mags. Now a days I typically drop it into my pocket inside a Desantis Nemesis pocket holster. I even have a Crimson Trace laser on it.
