Very nice gun. You probably know not to dry fire it. The firing pins are prone to breakage. If your gun doesn't have the removable firing pin, you may want to consider having FA modify it.

All 97s come with a bushing style replaceable firing pin...

I ASKED ABOUT THE 250 XTP BECAUSE THE GENT I GOT THE GUN FROM WAS HAVING TO TRIM CASES TO GET THE 240 XTP MAG TO FIT. I AM GOING TO BUY SOME OF THE HORNADY 250 XTP's, YOU CANNOT EVER HAVE TOO MANY 45 COLT BULLETS. Rey, I shoot the 250xtp over 20.5 gr of 2400 in my FA97 - it’s a tack driver! I think I’m getting around 1450fps from my 5.5” barrel.

I COULD HAVE SWORN I HAD SOME 250 XTP's "somewhere" BUT COULD NOT FIND THEM UNTIL YESTERDAY WHEN I FINALLY FOUND SEVERAL OLDER BOXES. MAY TRY KRAL's LOAD AND RUN IT SIDE BY SIDE WITH MY N110 LOAD AND THE SPEER 250gr GDHP.

They may even be able to tell what sort of pressure it would take in a revolver. Dvid Bradshaw

Dvid Bradshaw David, your skepticism is warranted - that’s why I said “think” in my above post. I was relying on memory, which gets worse each day. After checking my notes at home, it’s 200fps off of what I thought. I’m actually getting 1251fps from my 5.5” barrel.

As you already know, the standard 250 XTP works perfect in that gun. The 240 XTP mag I had to shorten the brass .03 to get it to fit. Reduced my powder charges by the same percentage (don’t remember what that was exactly), and it shot that load amazing! Two different chronographs clocked that load at just over 1500 fps. 7.5” barrel.

Encore: what would you do to make it look better than new?

Granted, it's a matter of tastes, but the factory finish can be improved on.
The Premier Grade Finish is labor intensive. Improving it is also labor intensive.
I like to polish the cylinder flutes and notch leads, then put a better brushed finish on the rest of the cylinder.
Polish the Ejector Rod Handle, screw heads, etc and refinish the gun with fine grit boards.
Believe it or not, you can do a lot of work with a Dremel and a handful of Emory Boards.
