So I did a thing and have some questions. I will soon have a Freedom Arms 97 .45 Colt with a 4 5/8” barrel. I am going to carry and use this one with iron sights. I need to call Fermin for the front sight. This is my first center fire Model 97 so is there anything I need to know about them or anything they might need? I have a .454 Model 83 so I don’t need a “Rocks and Dynamite” load. I am going to try a 200 gr to 250 gr cast bullet at 900 - 1100 FPS. I need to clean it up to see what I have.

Be careful with the length of your reloads, that cylinder was designed for SAAMI spec 1.600” OAL loads. A lot of Keith style SWC loads have to be deep seated over the driving band, the 270-SAA comes to mind.

Great grab and I sent you a text.
Oh, how I'd like to get my hands on that and make it look better than new for you!!!

The only thing I have thought was needed is a dab of UV set paint on the front sight. Even though my vision is still 20/20 my eyes do better with some contrast up front.

For me, that's a perfect configuration - 4 1/4", fluted cyl and white micarta grips - been looking for one in .44 special for ages. . With that said, I have a 4 1/4" (also 3.5" round butt) both .45 Colt. I have shot litterly thousands of RCBS 270 SAA (actual weight 280+-) over 7.8gr HP38 deep seated and crimped over the front drive band (CAUTION _ LOAD EXCEEDS SAAMI). . . These chrono a little over 900 fps in my 4 1/4" bbl. . . Lot's of options - if you need more info I may have it. . Paul Pay heed to Fowler's 1.600" OAL

The earlier FA97s had a rim recess large enough to chamber 45 Schofield while later ones would not. Ditto on the FA83 454 Casulls.
I've got both an older and new FA97 45 Colt. The Schofield was so impressive in the older gun that I sent the newer gun's cylinder to Clements for him to open the recesses to accept the brass.
I highly recommend this modification if your gun doesn't already accept the brass.
I'm sure the hysterical will recommend against this, but it's an ace in the hole for handloaders...

Congrats on buying your new favorite pistol. You're going to love it! I have saddled on the 250 XTP. Longshot makes for a great load. You can max out with h110, but not much fun to shoot.

I think I read somewhere that every time someone buys an FA 97, an angel gets its wings...

I HAVE A 7.5" MODEL 97 45 COLT AND IT IS A FAST SHOOTER GIVING EXCELLENT MV. 9.5grs - 10.5grs OF UNIQUE WITH THE COMMERCIALLY CAST/POWDER COATED 250gr RNFP OR THE 255gr SWC ("S&W LOADS") SHUD EASILY GET YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO BE.

Honestly I really like the 250gr Lyman 452664 rnfp. It's got a very generous flat meplat and is extremely accurate out to the 50yds I shoot it. Hammers deer pretty good too. Chambers in old Colts, 97's, and even my 1911!

I ASKED ABOUT THE 250 XTP BECAUSE THE GENT I GOT THE GUN FROM WAS HAVING TO TRIM CASES TO GET THE 240 XTP MAG TO FIT. I AM GOING TO BUY SOME OF THE HORNADY 250 XTP's, YOU CANNOT EVER HAVE TOO MANY 45 COLT BULLETS.
