I want to have one of the FA83 454s converted to 500 JRH.
But, this will be my first FA Project not completed by Freedom Arms.
Of course, Jack will do the work.
I'm looking to rechamber the cylinder, 5 1/2" Round Barrel and use the gun's existing sight base and ejector rod assembly.
There's no action work, opening window, blocking or converting from 6 to 5 Shots.
Am I missing any details? I'm hoping to ship the base gun this weekend.

I just don't want to miss a detail or option on this gun.
I got pretty good at knowing what was needed on a Ruger. But, this is a different animal.
This base gun has an action job and I don't think it'll need an overtravel screw with the Big Bore's attempt.
I'm drawing a blank on anything else...

I would check the firing pin and verify if it has the screw in firing pin bushing. If it is an older gun. Now is the time to have the upgraded bushing installed prior to conversion. You might ask Jack if he can do the replaceable firing pin bushing. If not and you would like to have it done. Now is the time prior to conversion. You can contact Freedom Arms and see if they will repair an other vendor modified FA revolver. If you have no preferences. Then this is irrelevant.
You may need a taller front sight insert. I use a 0.480" height on my fifty caliber guns shooting 440 grains and heavier bullets. Unless you are modifying your JRH brass. Case walls are too thick to allow deeper seating of heavier bullets than 440s and chambering becomes a "no go". Lee has addressed this issue. When he built his 500 JRH. Lee modified the case walls with a lathe and a modified chucking reamer. Machines and tooling most of us don't have.
You might want to think of grip mods while at Jacks, too. If all else fails ask Jack.

When Jack converted mine to 475L he did a barrel band with the FA sight base. Helps to hold ERH on the barrel and I like the look. Not sure why but he put a Ruger ejector rod assembly on mine. There is a stud about halfway up the barrel with a corresponding hole in the ERH to help hold it on also.

This is an older gun, which most definitely changes a few things.
It was sent back to FA for upgrades. All new springs, interchangeable firing pin, action job, etc.
The older FA has the Patient Number on the left side of the frame. The manufacturer and caliber are marked on the barrel.
So, I asked Jack to put the caliber on the right side and his mark on the left side, forward of the hammer pivot pin.

Definitely go for his modified grip frame and a set of his grips for it. A friend has one he did his grip mod on and it really tames the heavy loads down. Plus the goncalo alves wood he used is stunning.

Thinking this will come down to a Caliber change than a custom.
The FA is refined to the point it needs nothing.
I'm determined to do this with a FA and a couple BFRs before I retire....again.

No special options, but I sent a 454 FA 83 with a 6" barrel off to Jack about 6 months ago. My only request was for a 4.75 inch barrel and 500 JRH caliber change.
He had it done and back to me in 6 weeks. Couldn't ask for better service and the gun shoots as good as I had hoped it would.

Excellent information. I expect my request for a simple conversation will go smoothly as well.
Sounds very similar to my plans, mine just having a 5 1/2" Barrel.

Here’s a couple pics of my idea of a FA83 and Ruger, both 5 shot 500JRH’s that Jack built.
