For some time now I had been looking for a reasonably priced Model 10 for knocking around the woods with. 4” K-frame Smiths are just wonderful little guns and I was sorely lacking in that department. Browsing the police trade-in section online I was very surprised to find - among the ocean of .40 Glocks - a lovely Model 15-4 for a price I couldn’t say no to. Adjustable sights of course, but also a target hammer and trigger.
I picked the revolver up from my FFL and was very pleased upon inspection to find the action/trigger/fit/finish to be as excellent as I had hoped. I felt very lucky to score such a revolver at an excellent price and could already tell it was going to become a favorite in the rotation. As I was examining the 15-4 I looked down into the gun case and my FFL had another model 15 sitting there with two speed loaders for about the same price. Well, I couldn’t let that rest - I went back the next day and bought that one too. It’s a 15-2 with the same excellent action/trigger etc.
With both guns on my desk I got to take a deeper look at them and do some compare/contrast. Most notable differences was the pinned barrel on the 15-2 and standard hammer and trigger. I found that that the standard trigger/hammer actually fit my hand much better with the magna grips and I was a bit crowded on the 15-4. It took a couple days for me to remember that I had a set of K-frame target grips in the parts bin. Throwing those on the 15-4 was a game changer - the hammer and trigger now felt perfect.
Both guns are excellent and will see a lot of use. They’re both honest belt guns with the honest wear you’d expect on a working pistol. I plan on adding a lot more wear to them. The 15-4 was a Police duty gun, carried a lot but well taken care of. The 15-2 was a local farm gun, looking to have been carried and shot less than the 15-4.
I have a Simply Rugged holster en route and hope to develop some solid target loads for these revolvers. Overall VERY pleased with these guns.
