sounds like another nice setup. like to see a pic of the rifle when you get it done. I have one set of the old warne qd gloss rings left and will probably use them but would not mind trying the alaska arms rings.a pair sold on ebay last week for 40 bucks i missed out. i have a bunch of the old speer 250gr speer grand slams gonna try.

Mine shoots the factory hornady super performance 200gr very well. I have a box of the Barnes 200gr factory load but have not shot any of those yet. Been loading Varget with 250gr speer spitz sp. I really like the heavier bullet. Getting pretty good consistency of spreads and deviation but believe the accuracy can improve. Speer does not publish varget data for the 250 but max charge listed for Hornady and nosler 250s is 55gr. I worked up the speer from 51 to 55. No signs of pressure problems at 55. I need to measure my throat and get this bullet loaded right near the grooves. I really like this rifle but it does have solid recoil. I shoot a 8" plate at 200 yds and that thing swings back and forth for a bit. Its an impressive cartridge.

I think you’d like the Alaska Arms QD rings, JP. They are really nice and solid. That gentlemen that makes them also produces a floor plate replacement for Ruger 77/Hawkeyes that allows 2 extra .35 Whelen cartridges to be held in the mag.

Rings need a gun, a gun needs a scope, and on and on and on.

It really is an exponential kind of thing. Same with handguns. One more revolver, one more holster; oh, it needs new sights. Damn, now components.

Ive been using Varget. 55gr with 250gr Hornady and Speers. Both have acceptable hunting accuracy. Only about 2350fps. Hodgdon lists the hornady running faster but maybe my barrel is slower. The Hornady super performance 200gr shoots a better group and much faster. But its no fun considering a 30-06 can just about run equal. My friend got in a powder order to his shop. I bought the last 2 lbs of CFE 223. See if I can my velocity up close to Speers suggested numbers. I really like this Ruger rifle. Thinking of adding in the alaska arms floorplate and qd rings. I love my no1 rifles but feel like this gun is better for me getting multiple shots off.

Professor, your load of 55 gr of Varget under the 250 Hornady IL soft point was my most accurate load in my Whelen AI. As you say, several hundred feet under top velocities, but it put three shots into about a half inch with regularity.

Professor, your load of 55 gr of Varget under the 250 Hornady IL soft point was my most accurate load in my Whelen AI. As you say, several hundred feet under top velocities, but it put three shots into about a half inch with regularity. It has been accurate. Today I tested the 250gr Speers with 2gr under max CFE223. Got 100fps more fps than the Varget load at max. Lots of potential.
