That 20gr 4227 load gives 935fps with the SSK 345gr bullet for me from the Blackhawk. It's a killer

Two very good loads that are somewhat standard & were used a great deal by Silhouette shooters was 18.5 grs of 2400 or 20.0 grs of 4227. Not maximum loads but definitely beyond the loads you mention above. The 2400 load uses a standard LP primer, you might try standard & magnum with the 4227, usually the magnum works best. This was with the 250-260 gr bullets mentioned. Dick The above is very close to the direction I went mid range, but never opened my can of 4227. John gave me a recipe card when we did my first .45 Colt, and one of those loads on the card was 18 of 2400 w a 270 Keith. That load ran right at 1100 FPS from my 5.5" bull barrel .45 Bisley, and it just drilled holes repeatedly without fail, and did it comfortably. 200 rounds at a sitting on a range day practicing varying distances was a non issue. The 13 of HS6 load with the same bullet is the next step down, as noted in the reference Bushog made to John's stuff. I never used that one simply because the 18 of 2400 ran so well for me. 24 of H110 was the other one I ran that was great, but it's above where you wanna be. Bunch of good loads these guys have given regardless.

Would 20 gn 4227 under 250 - 260 be a Level 3 load only for a large frame Ruger Vaquero, or a Level 2 load that I could (prudently) use in a mid-frame Ruger? The lighter NV .45 is my preferred backpacking carry revolver. But I have both.
