Initial observations, (wife came home early), the walnut stock has almost no figure but it is surely straight, tight grain. Has a beautiful ebony cap and the barrel band sling swivel blend beautifully to the barrel. I have not checked bedding or even inserted the bolt yet but I hope to get a little time tomorrow. (I dont want my wife sleeping on the couch on Valentine's Day.) The front sight does have a hood and the rear sight came folded down. I flipped it up and the sights line up beautifully. It does look like a proper African game rifle.
Oh, and of COURSE it is supposed to rain Friday afternoon to Saturday night AGAIN. Why in the heck cant it rain on Tuesday and Wednesday?

I snuck mine out of the box last night for a little bit. The front sight is not hooded. I mis-remembered that one. The bolt is slick and the trigger is the best Ruger trigger I have ever felt. Checked the stock twice, no figure.

Dont plan on shooting mine just yet. I have a Mauser 35 Whelen I havent even broke in yet but I have high hopes!! Well, those Lipsey’s Hawkeye African’s are an incredibly good investment, if nothing else. Wish I could afford one, but too many irons in the fire. I have a nice low comb 1955 Model 70 featherweight ‘06, with a nicely refinished stock, that would make a nice 35 Whelen. However, heavy Nosler Partitions can adequately ventilate anything I would pursue with a 35 Whelen. I’m very tempted to rebore or rebarrel though. Hope both of your Whelens shoot!

This will be my 3rd Whelen on hand, but I will have to shoot the new ruger.

Lovely Springfield. I would appreciate that Ruger "African" in .275/7x57 or maybe a .243 or .250 Savage. Low recoil.
