I was give a bunch of 12 gauge brass CBC shotgun shells. They were loaded with black powder and a stout load of 4’s. I disassembled them and thought about reloading them. Any experience?

Yes sir. Been loading 16's for years. Square load for the gauge, black powder, traditional wad column, over shot card sealed in with waterglass. Mine take large pistol primers. For the 16 that's 2 1/2 drams of Ffg, hard card, cushion wad, shot, over shot card, waterglass to cover card. They aren't intended to be loaded with smokeless. They're for BP guns with 2 1/2 in. chambers. Below the trigger guard of the upper combination gun is 4 os my 16 bore brass shells.

Are they modern shells that take a pistol primer not a 209? I play load with smokeless and slugs. There fun.

There basically like a big straight revolver cartridge. I got paper over cards, and some thick fiber wads, and loaded them up. Drop the powder, over card, tamp. Wad tamp, shot or slug, then I’ll put an over card on shot, using Elmer’s white glue around the card just below the rim. Drys in 1/2 hour, ready to shoot. You can always do the “Billy the Kid” and use a load of dimes. There fun to play with

And great folks when you order I’ve bought a ton of stuff from them in the past. Really like there spreader inserts. Just ordered more this past week. But to be honest I try to not give them my business if possible. During the height of the 209 primer shortage they took advantage of us in my opinion. They were the only people in the US that had cheddites and we paid for it dearly!!!! Same on powder and Hazmat fees. Everyone else is cheaper. Power Valley is great.

I have only used black powder in 12ga brass shells for cowboy shooting. No high volume and done with the simplest of tools

That is so ………well it bugs me to hear that……..changes one’s view of folks I have a friend put in my orders when he orders……….looking elsewhere from now on. Thanks for the heads up. Sadly I was ramping up to do Brass in all gauges for finer older guns.

They make cool tools, reloader parts etc. but have definitely spent most my money elsewhere. I’ve had most of there loading manuals but they tend to use mostly there wads/components etc. plus the data tends to be hot or the velocities are over exaggerated or in correct. They are super nice people to talk with if you have a question or loooking for something.

My every day 12 gauge load is 3/4 oz shot over 14.8 grains of Extra-Lite with AA or STS hulls. Low pressure load. I got the recipe from a buddy of mine that’s been at the SXS game for probably 60+ years. He shoots mostly 1/2 oz 12 gauge loads!!! It works just fine in his Foxes. Most are choked tight. He had the load tested by Tom Armbrust. I think he said around 6000 PSI.

But looking at a light 2” English 12 bore. And an 1800s 2 1/2”……..

I've started playing with the CBC 410 2.5 shells and some 9.3x74R for 3" 410.
Ballistic Products Spec brass case reloading manual is for 12, 20 and 16ga only with black powder. No smokeless loads.
The small bore manual covers 24,28,32 or 36 and 410. They are all for plastic hulls, but they do have data in the small bore manual for TSS high density shot.
There is an article on loading brass 12s with red dot that I have found and then Ed Harris experiment with 2400 in the 410 brass. Right now I'm sperimenting with H110, Lil-Gun and MP300 in 3/8th, 1/2 and 11/16 respectively with Large Pistol Primers. Once I get the chrony numbers I'm looking for I'll send out some for testing to see where I'm at.
Note that I'm using 43 cal overpower Nitro cards and 45 cal overshot cards due to the larger internal capacity.

But looking at a light 2” English 12 bore. And an 1800s 2 1/2”…….. I recently purchased an English gun. A Lancaster Damascus 2 1/2” 12 gauge. I intent to shoot sporting clays with it using my 3/4 oz load. It should be in the US in a few weeks. I’ve been load up some 2 1/2” loads. I originally used once fired RST hulls. I have access to a good source of them from a club that has a lot or wealth/vintage shooters!!!! lol. But they didn’t work that good. The Cheditte hulls are kind of cheap. So I’ve been cutting down Federal hulls to 2 1/2”. They work perfectly. I’ve been shooting them in an Ithaca NID for a few weeks. They crimp up nice after cutting down. Best part is I have an unlimited supply at my club guys just trash them. Only a few guys reload them.
