The cost of loaded ammo IS a reason not to buy it. Probably why it is 400 dollars cheaper than a similar one in 30WCF. Part of the reason TO buy it. You can't afford NOT to buy it!

Got 40 rounds of Hornady factory ammo and 10 empties coming from an individual. Since I found loaded ammo (finally) I spoke for the rifle. Should pick it up Thursday or Friday.

Couple months ago Reeder had 5,000 cases and was selling them for $2 each. I bought 200. Watch his web site as I bet he does this sale again sometime this year.

I have a neat story surrounding the .405 Winchester. My dad has collected Winchesters since the late 1960's and always looks for good deals on them. Back in the early 1980s we were at a gun show in Baltimore and ran across an original 1895 in .405, take-down model. The gun was really clean. Wood was near perfect and the finish was 95% minimum. The seller wanted $800, which was a lot of money back then. Dad haggled with the guy and he came down to $750. Dad wanted to pay $700 and almost walked. I was around 9 or 10 at the time and said, "Oh, just buy it for $750. It looks like a cool gun" (cool for me back then was bigger caliber). Dad caved at it went home with us. Later, we found out that Winchester only ever made around 70 in take-down configuration. In 2002 bought a Miroku built high-grade. I wanted the field grade, but the top version was offered at a price I couldn't resist. That motivated me to get a shooter grade .405 and shortly thereafter the Ruger No. 1 came out. I've shot the Hornady 300 grain RN and a cast bullet of my design weighing 290 grs. And like others, I was fortunate to buy a lot of Hornady brass over the years. The stuff is really hard to find nowadays. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Chasing perfection five shots at a time"

Just saw this as I don't come over to the rifle section too often... Being a .41 Guy you will love it...
I have the same rifle and put a Williams receiver sight on it. Had a stainless #1 but sold it. Also have one of the 1895 leverguns and a TC Encore barrel that was cut down to 20" for treestand use...
Unless one is hunting REALLY big game, flat nose cast bullets from 280-350 grains at 16-1900 fps are a lot more pleasant to shoot than the 2200 fps 300 grain factory standard...
The guy who owns Accurate Molds is a .41 Guy and has several .405 molds in the 300-350 range...
